Yes, I got my Beowulf and BMG confused for a moment. They are both calibers that are completely unnecessary. You get better accuracy at long range with a 338 Lapua, and even a 308 Win. BMG and Beowulf are good for putting holes in armored vehicles, complete overkill on flesh.

.50 cal BMG is not accurate? You silly, sloppy. US and Canadian snipers in Afghanistan have confirmed kills shooting a .50 cal at ranges beyond a mile. The downside to the .50 is its weight; that's what makes the 7.62 preferable for most situations.

You answered your own question silly goose. I didn't say 50 BMG wasn't accurate, I said it's less accurate than 338 and 308 Win (in most cases).
50 BMG @ 740gr will drop about 27 MOA at 1000 yards.
338 Lapua @ 300gr will drop about 24 MOA at 1000 yards.
308 @ 200gr will drop about 26 MOA at 1000 yards.
The lower the MOA, the better.

Yea, I confused my rounds earlier. Yes, 50 Beowulf, along with its big brother the 50 BMG are both junk rounds for their class. I'd much rather plink flesh with a 338 or 308, and 20MM when I have the need to put holes in armored vehicles.

To compensate for drop... adjust your aimpoint. The .50 cal is energetically superior at every range. The gun is too heavy to carry though. Do you have to work to be smug and stupid at the same time.

Not every range. The point where the rounds velocity becomes subsonic, makes any large bore projectile far less effective on hard targets. Conversely smaller clambering allows for decreased Wind load, giving the user far more penetration at ranges beyond 1700 meters. This effect can sometimes be decreased in hotter climates, provided a relatively low humidity giving larger calibers an increased effective range. But if it's cold, I will choose something smaller.

It's an energy problem. The .50 cal has lots of energy. Smaller calibers have much less. Even at long range the .50 cal delivers devastating energy to a target. During Vietnam, US soldiers used the Browning machine gun as a sniper rifle for long range sniping. It is simply the best sniper round possible in a semi-practical rifle.
