Your absolutely right that those tiny black fungus gnats are harmless to your plant. Its the larvae that feed on your roots that causes issues.I know what you're talking about OP, not sure what they're called but I had them. They thrive only in soil so therefore are harmless to the plants. However they're very annoying. I tried using soapy water in the soil (bad idea for roots but I didn't know at the time) and that didn't fully get rid of em. The problem was the temp. was too high. I lowered my temp by putting a fan in and they disappeared. Are your temps high?
It wasn't much soap, just enough to make it you know, soapy. And nothing happened to the plant but after I did it a friend freaked out saying it's bad for the roots.Your absolutely right that those tiny black fungus gnats are harmless to your plant. How much soap did you put in your water and what happened to your plants?
I see. I usually use 2 to 3 drops per half gallon. It wasn't much soap, just enough to make it you know, soapy. And nothing happened to the plant but after I did it a friend freaked out saying it's bad for the roots.
And also, they weren't gnats. They were extremely tiny white bugs.

@luger: its hard to say without pictures. The link I provided should explain everything if you have fungus gnats.
Yep. It's what I had, just try lowering your temps if possible. That's how I solved it...yeah i read it. dont think its gnats. but thanks for the help =]
