Tip on Foliage

Mispronouncing a word, or pronouncing it in an unfamiliar way is not particularly comparable to people simply inventing their own words. Foh-lee-ahge, not foil-ahge. In the word foliage, you can see that the letter l comes between the o and the i, and as such, it's not foil. Pretentious? No, that would be... jumping on people for no reason, because I think I'm better than them. I'm simply annoyed that the propagation of a nonexistent word through this culture makes everyone look illiterate. Spelling cat as kat in a text isn't going to kill anyone, but kindergarten teachers teaching their students to spell it kat would have huge ramifications. This is the difference.
EDIT:
It's so funny how normal people do this, and then talk shit about dyslexia.

That one fucked me up for a minute, I already knew foliage, but trichome was a new word. I read it, said it right in my head, people started talking about trichromes and it was like... eehh... I've only been in the culture for so long, I shouldn't correct people... BUT I DON'T SEE AN R IN THIS WORD!!

Hmm... FOILage, triCHROME... there's something going on with decorative swords here...
i still think you are being pretentious.. although maybe that is because i do not have a passion or love for the english language perhaps you genuinely do , and when you see errors you feel duty bound to correct them ?

if i can understand what others are typing, then i do not care how they spell words
or pronounce them, as long as i can understand them and i do not require any extra time to translate their ebonics, why should i care ?
i feel no need to be judgmental about them

many conflicting rules exist in the english language .. perhaps it should be updated ..
those that trumpet it for all its gloy, just seem like another grop of "followerz" to me , i like to inv3nt my own rules :)

when i am in conversation with people, (typing) i would expect them to have the ability to read between the lines, and correct any small errors or typos i would make mentally as they are reading .. anyone that would be incapable of reading between the lines, i would no longer wish to communicate with .. as they take too much time spoon feeding

i do not think less of a person who does get english 100% correct and i do not Feel their life will suffer as a result of not living upto the op's standard of English or perhaps american english
when the standard falls so low i will just move on

check out the uk growers thread, the ebonics there is off the scale, i find it hard to read what these young folk are typing about

if you could go there M8 and help them to use standard english, that would be fun, although in theiR case it could be a mix of bad grammar and deliberate ebonics and completely invented words/slang and words that have been bastardized

i came across a thread the other weEek, some americans were using the phrase/term "top off"
in the uk we would use the term "top up" to mean the same thing, i did wonder why there is a difference

peace m8

there are all sorts of words that have misunderstood pronunciations.

the OP is referring to ignorance. people who use words daily and have absolutely no idea what they are saying, just mimicking what they think they heard others say. it irritates me as well. it's not the same as choosing to pronounce the h in "whip". saying "expresso" is not at all the same. expresso is a made up word only used by people who don't know what they are saying.

now if you'll excuse me, i'm off to the lie-berry to make in front of people with my cup of expresso while i look at the foilage.

the OP is being judgemental, as are you , if you can comprEhend what is being said, then why would it irritate you ?
if you possess the ability to correct them, that would indicate that you knew what they meant in the first place
just seems like a form of one-upmanship imo

i think that sometimes some folk just need to be correct about something
so they seek out others to correct , and will settle for the most futile moot points as long as they are right about something
perhaps this explains why such people become irritated themselves by such trivia

peace :)

i don't know when proper language skills became "trivia". i must have been absent that day.

no wonder the literacy rates in the UK and US are going down the toilet. both countries churn out pop stars like they're pez but neither can get into the top 10 for worldwide literacy.

i suppose it boils down to priorities. if no one cares it must not be that important...

to hell with literacy :cuss:
