Thicker branching = genetics, environmental response, health of plant & nutrient ratio used.
-phenotypic expressions will vary, some respond well, some dont. Some genes already grow with fat knuckles on the stalk/branch.
-Oscillating fans can help to a point but too wide of a day/night temperature swing can increase stretch which doesn't necessarily make stronger branching.
-Cannabis has a phytochrome system, the more far red to red ratio your lights put out, the more they will stretch. Not enough stretch is just as bad as too much stretch and it will vary by strain.
-Not enough nitrogen and/or potassium or too much calcium will cause branches to harden up (less flexible, more woody) & high phosphorus levels can actually encourage stretch. Nutrient equilibrium and consistency will play a huge roll with the health of your plant during each season with early flower being the most important imo.
-Silica can help strengthen cell walls, which in general makes the whole plant stronger along with increased resistance to pest. Again it will only help to a point and may not even be needed in good soil.
I disagree with defoliating for bigger bottom buds, you will stunt the top cola and fuck its quality potential by pulling its leaves, further more you will slow photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, stretch and your new smaller plant with nutes stored in the roots can no longer and never will take a heavy feeding again.
It's also very easy to over water when this happens, why wouldn't it be? Your plant can't move water as quickly now.
Air quality/flow,temperature and humidity would gain you more then defoliating and defoliating would actually worsen results in a good environment. Ever try defoliating an outdoor cannabis plant?
When LED users discovered they need to bump up temperatures for more yield, they did and got bigger buds all around the plant including the shaded areas.
When co2 users plug the regulator in, they notice (and so have i) bigger buds all around the plant even in shaded areas.
When i changed from a 400lec to 1000w hps my plants made even more fucken foliage with fan leaves bigger then my hand and would leave the bottom of the stalk in a dark mess much worse then the 400lec however, the buds EVERYWHERE got bigger even the shaded popcorn buds.
Why doesn't my side branching make as fat of a bud as my main cola even though they are leveled?
Oh yeah thats right, apical dominance will render those lower bud sites slower with less ability to utilize nutrients & light. The best way to speed it up is metabolism and still, it will never move like its dominant cola. A bigger light not only brings more par to the table but can also (depending on the light) help warm the whole plant deeper into the foliage and lessen the humidity levels which will speed up total metabolism if environment/feeding conditions allow it.
Anybody want to bring some facts to the table then I'll be right here waiting to learn more.
