To cool a 600 watter...

Hi RIU,

I got a brand new 600w HPS in yesterday to replace the 250.

She's producing an awful amount of heat, any advice on how to cool her? I didn't have this problem with the 250 so I never thought about it.

I have a small clip fan in the grow room (enough for 6 plants) and she's blowing near the bulb, but not directly on it. I'm going to get another fan today or tomorrow. Where should I put that?

Pics of your setups are most welcome, it's always nice to see what other people have going.

you should think about heat issues before you purchase a higher watt hps bulb.
i got a 600 watt.
does it have an air cooled hood?
if not you should def. get one. it should help the heat a little.
i got a 3 foot by 3 foot room fan going and its keeping my grow closet between 64 degrees at its lowest at night. and 76 degrees during the day, at its highest.
its no where hot compared to 1000 watts

Nope, mine doesn't have an air cooled hood, or anything of that sort...

I'm thinking a fan blowing on it will surely help, no?

I have a 600 and 400 in the same tent... Both in cooltubes... The problem with cooltubes is that you loose 10-20% of light...
The fans will not help get rid of the heat.. it will just make it move around the room... what you want to do is throw that hot air out of the grow room... and bring fresh air in....
U can use ducting from your exhaust fan and place it right infront of the bulb.. it will be much more effective than the fan...
and make sure you have an air intake...... If you have a grow tent open the air holes and obviously another fan cant hurt...

Yup, thanks - I get the concept now.

However, the only intake fan I have is in the ceiling (I'm growing in the bathroom). I leave the shower curtain half open so air can freely circulate, but I don't have any duct tubes or anything like that leeding to the intake fan.

Maybe you should consider moving your setup to a much larger area, like the basement, attic, or the garage? That's about your only option, other than buying cooled hoods and exhaust fans, or an air conditioner.

nah. im sure he can do it. if its impossible to keep it under 80 degrees then yeah...its time to find a new space to grow

Well the temperature is about 30-31 degrees celcius with the 600w. That's about 86 farenheit? It's not the best, but it's ok, right?

That's pushing it, but still okay. I had temps up to 95* this summer, and my plants did fine. It's not ideal, but they will do fine at 86*. Just make sure they don't run dry for long, or they'll droop over quicker than shit.lol Also, the high temp will effect them more when you put them into bloom, because bloom requires lower temps than veg.(72-75* is ideal for bloom) They'll still do good in the mid 80*'s though, mine did. Just try to keep the temps down as much as you can, don't let 'em get too thirsty, and they'll be fine. :)

Alright, well my humidifier works well normally, but the plants are so big that it's not having much effect on the upper leaves lol.

I just built an intake fan out of an old PC fan. It isn't much at all but it's better than nothing. I'm leaving in 30 mins to go buy a new clip fan, I'll try and figure out where to put it.
