I'm in northern california and have a doctors reccomendation.
Is the county issued ID card worth getting?
Is the county issued ID card worth getting?
If you are talking about the actual county issued ID cards, it will be from a government office in the county you are in. Usually part of the county health department.not to hijack, but im in central cali and want to get my cannibis card. Where do you go to get it?
Your arguments are valid, but if you apply for the state card in a county that does not want medical marijuana, then it makes one uncomfortable to apply.YES! Get the County ID Card!
Do you complain about legalization? Are you upset that the government refuses to tax a plant that they could potentially make money from? Then why would you avoid paying a form of tax to a California County Health Department?!? After all, the money DOES go to fund the medical marijuana program...
And again, why not abide by the taxation efforts and make the State of California happy? They ARE turning their heads in many, many cases in regards to marijuana cases. Many would agree that California has the most relaxed marijuana policies in the US. With that being said, I am more than happy to give my cash to the very program that protects me from jail.
Your concern will likely be; "I don't feel good about being on the "government's list."
Receiving a medical marijuana recommendation and registering for an ID card are not illegal in any way. Furthermore, the DEA has not ever been known to target and/or arrest citizens who have access to medical marijuana. The DEA does target specific dispensaries and co-ops, but rarely makes any arrests. Many raids simply result in all product and cash being seized and no charges end up being filed. Legal robbery.
Every dispensary you go in to will ask you to sign a release, designating that dispensary as your caregiver. That dispensary keeps your information on file. Those files are subject to be confiscated by the DEA if they were ever a raid to take place. At which time the DEA will know that you've done business and use that evidence against you to prove that you purchased.
Also, there has been a state-wide crackdown on some of the "less than legitimate" doctors around town. Is your doctor on this list? If your doctor were to come under investigation by the DEA, would your information be safe?
And remember, all these DEA raids are and always have been authorized and ordered by our FORMER President George Bush. NOT current President Barack Obama! In fact, Mr. Obama has pledged to end the raids in state's that currently allow medical marijuana.
Do you need to fear being on a list now that Mr. Obama is President? That depends on you. If you fear the County ID card program though, you also need to fear the dispensaries and the clinic where you received your recommendation. In my opinion, the person who avoids paying for the ID Card is the same person who will never go into a dispensary. It would be senseless to worry about one and not the other from a legal standpoint.
All this for a county card where the police knows you, just so you can get in quicker with the dispensaries? No thanks. It's just not worth the drama to "cooperate with the cops".First of all, I think that we can all agree that MediCann is awesome. Their personal database and verification system is great, and ideally all clinics and physicians should begin to follow in the footsteps of MediCann.
Secondly, whilst many Counties have gone and banned medical marijuana dispensaries all together, the majority of the Counties will not have you thrown in jail for medical marijuana. Furthermore, even if the marijuana isn't for medicinal purposes, odds are that your receiving the $100 fine and losing your weed. Not to mention that the vast majority of major cities have enacted "Lowest Law Enforcement Priority" ordinances for marijuana offenses. I'm not sure if you happen to live in a really anti-marijuana section of CA, but our experiences tend to paint a different picture.
As well all know though, there are some cities and some officers who are against medical marijuana, despite the laws. Although we've experienced these types of cops and cities, at worst we usually end up with a civil citation and having the medicine confiscated. Not that I'm saying that is acceptable by any means.. Rather that these types of situations may occur regardless of whether you choose to register for a County ID Card or not... You'll encounter the same bullshit with the recommendation alone, when it comes time for the officer to verify your legitmacy.
When you receive a (potentially controversial) doctor's recommendation, you assume the responsibility that comes along with it. Part of that responsibility is dealing with the chance that the "pigs" might choose to fuck with you regardless.
In Orange County, we have a legal medicinal grow operation, inside of a large Condo. The Condo has central air conditioning and the venting is horrible! Needless to say, neighbors complained to the local police department of the smell. They responded to the call, and we politely explained that we're operating legally under CA-HSC 11362.5 and S.B 420. We showed our recommendations and caregiver paperwork, at which time the County ID Card's WERE REQUESTED. Did we have them? You bet!
The officers took down our information and told us that they made the local PD aware of the situation, and that we would never be bothered again about this incident.
Of course, theres always 2 sides to every coin. So it depends on how you want to look at it.. From our point of view, the Police seem to be more cooperative and accepting when they know that we've abided by the law and paid our taxes.
Let's face it. Isn't the war on marijuana prohibition about the government making money anyways?!? If I can choose to pay the tax and show a good faith effort that I really am trying to abide by the law, I think that counts for a lot.
wow...... talk about ignorance at its finest. the little piece of paper you have from the doctor is nothing more than a recomendation and nothing more...a cop will wipe his ass with that paper while you are siting in holding for however long he wants to hold you while he "verifies" your recomendation with your doctor. good luck with that. and brother I own my own bussiness, have multiple investments into other ventures and i hold down a great marriage with an awesome active social life...very far from a lazy stupid stoner...All this for a county card where the police knows you, just so you can get in quicker with the dispensaries? No thanks. It's just not worth the drama to "cooperate with the cops".
I'm a patient with a doctor standing behind me. Do people taking other medicines notify the government?
No. I'm sorry, but I'm just not going to involve the government on my personal information, it's called the doctor-patients privilege.
Honestly, I think people who get the STATE card are the typical lazy stupid stoners who'd tell their information to cops for convenience. For what? So you dont have to wait to get in a dispensary?
THAT'S CALLED A FIEND.

Are you kidding me? A State card won't get a knock on your door? That's no guarantee. It has to do with you paying a fee to the government for the County ID card, as the law recommends that you should. Nobody is forcing you to register and abide by the recommended rules. Rather, I am suggesting that by choosing to register for a County ID Card is not going to result in the police knocking on your door.
Of course I will never grow insane amounts. I value my freedom too.Are you growing 20+ lbs. of medicine every year for distribution? Are you so high up in the game that you're considering Swiss bank accounts? If not, the odds are that your being a bit paranoid. As the average medical cannabis patient, your very likely not going to be arrested and prosecuted because you chose to register with your county.
We're not in the movies calm down.....Maybe you grow 200 plants and you happen to blow someones dome off with a shotgun? Ok, now you might have some legal issues. Yet, again this is a result of your trigger-happiness and not because you registered with the county. I have NEVER heard of, or personally seen any case where a medical marijuana patient was targeted by the government. Even in DEA raids on dispensaries, the medicine and cash are confiscated and no charges are filled.
Oinkers don't respect the law......don't kid yourself. For every good cop there's 3 million evil ones.I'm not sure if you've maybe heard something that I haven't..
Why not cooperate with the police when they do respect the law? Did you read my Orange County example?
I'm not gonna sit here and get into a pissing contest about money or try to claim to be Bill Gates, but the fee over the state card is not much.I'm gonna come right out and say how ironic it is for you to suggest that "lazy stoners" are the ones who go register. If the guy that pays the tax and gets the card is lazy, what is the guy who sits on his ass being a cheapskate and won't go fill out a simple form at the health department?
The tax to take or grow medicine? Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?Come on now... Let's be sensible about this. It has nothing to do with a dispensary at all. It has to do with you deciding to pay the tax or not pay the tax.
Get serious. I am not saying "all cards are evil".But not registering for the ID Card and avoiding the tax because your afraid of being arrested by the DEA?? Thats just plain silly!
