Courtesy is the grease that keeps the wheels of society turning. I don't think we should treat anyone with more or less courtesy because of their gender though.

+Rep, you nailed the point of the thread exactly

When pressed why men should do these sorts of things exclusively for women the only reply you get is "because he's a man".. Leykis made a good point in the clip, that this type of behavior from men and women in our culture developed before women had any rights and were forced to stay at home with the kids and raise the family while the man went and earned a living to support the rest of the family. Framing it in that context, it absolutely makes perfect sense. Contrast that with today where here in the west anyway men and women are at the highest level of equality we've attained in the history of our species, yet these societal pressures still exist, it's archaic in the world we live in today.

I'm sure some of you who read this will take what I said completely out of context when you probably just misunderstood or read it through some sort of biased opinion you already had of me. So to be clear, I'm not saying men shouldn't do these things for women, in fact, when I'm with someone (man or woman), and I'm the first one to the door I'll stand there and hold it open for whoever is next, it has nothing to do with the persons gender. I'm saying that there should not be social pressure to do them, men should not be judged for not doing them, and equality goes both ways, especially in the 21st century.
