I realize that you want to avoid poisons BUT if you are refering to german cockroaches (typical pain in the ass ones that take over kitchens)no amount of cleaning is gonna get rid of them once they are there without using some kind of pesticide. Try this in kitchen and all baths first: drill a hole approx 3/8 inch to allow access to every void in kitchen and baths, you can hide the holes but you have to be able to treat in the hidden voids. That means around dishwasher, stove, water heater, voids under, beside and above cabinets ect. you have to get to every void you can as it dark and a perfect habitat for them. Empty cabinets totally and all drawers ect. pick up some boric acid (roach proof) and a turkey baster(with squeeze ball) and give a couple blasts into the 3/8 inch holes you drilled so you get some of the dust into every void. Picture the cloud that comes out of the baster with every squeeze and you will get the general picture. You want to get a CLOUD of dust into those voids and let it settle inside. Next pick up a few cans of insecticide with a long tip like on a can of WD40. Run a spray treatment thru EVERY crack and crevise you can find and with the long tube tip you can get to almost every place imaginable including under drawers, in cabinets, and every other place you can possible stick that tip into. I mean every one dont skip any. Lastly, pick up a gallon of a decent insecticide with the pump on top and start at your front door working in one direction spray the baseboards in that direction. As long as you started say to the right your eventually going to come back to where you started and not miss anything. Thse three procedures will help immensly, but if its a apartment with adjoining walls(especially adjoining kitchens) it might not cure it but since the bastards hide in almost all the areas you just treated it will help keep them under control. Now if you want to up the treatments a bit you can try sevin dust instead of the boric acid, its works faster and better but has half the residual staying power. Dont waste your money on the bombs. This wont work over night but it should get better daily if done completely (Dont Forget - every void and crack and crevise)

There is a product called Gentrol. It is a growth inhibitor. Spray everywhere. It is non toxic to people and animals. In a month you'll see deformed roaches, then eventually they all die out.
