Too much light?

Hello folks. Ive got a question about light/heat. Started up a new grow and this is currently in its second week. Setup is a 600w hps lamp which was turned on 18/6 from when the seedlings started coming up. Is is about 1,4 meters from the plants so I thought heat stress/burning wouldnt be a problem. Though many of the leaves seem to be curling a little bit upwards and deforming a bit (this particular one downwards).

Is this caused by the heat/light or might it be overwatering or underwatering? How could i fix this without getting more equipment like a weaker light etc?

Temperature is around 20-25 degrees celcius and humidity 30

Cheers!

it does not look like heat stress as you have your lights a long ways away (1.4 meters is over 4 feet)
Dr. Jekyll

Looks more like an over nute issues, when did you start using nutes?
What soil are you using, and do you have drain holes in those containers?
Mr. Hyde

It is hard for me to really see anything wrong in that picture. The leaves look a little wrinkled, but nothing that would alarm me. When you put your hand near the canopy of your plants can you feel warmth on the back of your hand? If so use your judgement on if it is too much, and keep in mind it has to feel that 18 hours a day. You said it was 1,4 meters away, if you meant 1/4 meter away that's just under 10 inches and that may be a little close. I have a 400w HPS that sit about 14 inches from the tallest plants canopy. Can you move the light up at all?

The soil is ATAMI, janeco-light-mix. Yea sure there are drain holes in the containers. Maybe nuts are collecting in the soil since I only water small amounts each time and the soil is not drained. At this early stage should the container (7 liters) be saturated with water for each watering? (to let it dry up intill the next of course). Started giving nuts after one week.

As for the light its actually 1,4 meters about 55 inches i guess. In general the plants look good so I suppose its not worth worrying too much about. just want them to be good and healthy.

Thanks for the advise!

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was spot on I believe. The soil you are using says it has enough nutes for the first two weeks so you probably shouldn't have started feeding it so early. However I don't think you have done any damage really. Just make sure you aren't over feeding it. Also when they are tiny seedlings you want to go with a dampening until they can handle a true watering, but yours are old enough that you do want to. I have seen different numbers thrown around but I like about 20% run off when I water. Make sure you have plain waterings mixed in as well. And your plants don't seem to be stretching hard or anything for the light, but 55 inches seems pretty far away to me.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it! But to get about 20% run off when watering a 7 liter container i would have to soak it completely, is that ok?

you are not over watering but I'm afraid soaking it completely may create new problems
you may wish to consider backing off your nutes for awhile, as typically you should only use nutes every second or third watering
the leaves have the classic wrinkled texture look associated with too much nutes
Dr. Jekyll

Your choice of containers will be your downfall, as they are too shallow thus your plants will be stunted
Mr. Hyde

Yeah, just make sure you are letting it drain completely when you water. Also make sure you let it really dry out in between waterings. You should be able to tell the difference after a while by just picking up the pot. I don't water on a set amount of time or days, to be honest it fluctuates all the time. I pick up each plant every day, a couple times a day. They will be much lighter when they need to be watered. Then I give them a really good soak, drain them until they stop dripping and then put them back under the lights. You want to encourage the roots to seek out the water instead of keeping it readily available right up on the plant

Maybe watering like that is a preference. Don't take my word as scripture, I have only been in this for about 4 months. I can really only tell you what works in my experience, but I would back off on the nutes like he said. I believe dr. Jekyll and mr Hyde has more experience than I, so I would defer to him.

They look as if they are underwatered - how does the soil feel?

You're light is very far from plants - is it an air-cooled reflector, if so, get it closer.

40"-44",s is ideal for a 1kw hps when starting seedlings. The most important thing for seedlings is making sure they dont go dry.
