Traditional ballasts vs. Digital ballasts

Lumateks are the shit! all the bugs are worked out of them. I have a computer, plasma tv, and cable all right above my ballast with no RF.

also a digital ballast with cooling fans is a joke. a quality digital unit should not make extreme heat to where fans are needed to keep the unit from meltdown. being resin sealed it a great plus too.
Yes but being resin sealed, it makes them unrepairable, unlike the good old mags.

i love my new digitals. they come right on. no loud click or anything. the bulb just goes "comes on". they produce NO sound and they run hella cooler. i had to get on a small step ladder to be able to get high enough to have leverage to grab my magnetic ballast off the shelf it sits on. it weighs well over 30 pounds. my digitals weigh 3, i think.

I just received a 600 watt digital and so far I am happy. I went with the HTG as the fan sound is not a big deal to me. After letting it run for 12 hours, it is definitely cool to the touch. I really like the way it fires off the bulb. It is soft starting instead of head kicking the bulb, so I can see that as a plus for sure.

The two different ones I had were called digital greenhouses and they both made a super-loud buzzing sound. FDD, what brand of digi ballast do you have in the pic?

I have a Digital Greenhouse and while the fan makes a little noise, it is quieter than my computer.

Did yours make the buzzing sound from the start, or did it begin after a while of sue?

It made the buzzing from the start... real loud. So, they sent me a new one right away, and that was even louder. So, now I have a big coolstar but it is totally silent

Okay. Mine is not making any noises other than a light whir from the fan. In the coolstar digital?

No the coolstar is magnetic.. I got scared of the digis when 2 in a row buzzed that loud.... not scared, they worked well, they were just super-loud not stealth at all....

FDD is showing off his Lumatek's. I have the same ballast (probably less wattage). The purple ones are their latest generation and it's a big improvement.

After being on for hours my 250 watt is room temp,.. my 400 w is about 10 degrees above room. They emit no sound whatsoever.

They're also tiny and light compared to their magnetic counterparts.

I have both a digi ballast from HTG and a ballast kit. Both of them are 600watts. The kit buzzes a bit and is so hot I can only hold my hand on it for like 3 seconds. The digi is super quiet, all I hear is the very faint sound of the fan. And that sound is killed by the sound of my 747cfm exhaust fan anyway. It runs nice and cool, I can hold my hands on it for as long as I want and its just warm to the touch.
