tranplating in to different soil

i have a freind who gave me a few plants one of them is in a tiny pot i want to transplant it so it doesnt get rootbound,they are allready about 7 week into veg and i need to tranplant now,only problem is my freind didnt tell me what soil he used and i cant get hold of him as he is on holiday,i was wondering could i use a completely different soil to what the plant is growing in now?

you can put it in any soil that you want....a diff brand of soil shouldnt effect your plant...
