Transplanted root bound, do over ?

Yesterday I transplanted my 2 foot lady from a 1.75 gallon pot to a 5 gallon pot, I was also changing soil from Scotts Premium Potting Soil to FF Ocean Forest. However, she was really root bound so I misted down the roots, tried to work some of the dirt out and also stabbed several holes in sides with claw digging tool but it was really hard to work the dirt out and I did in some areas, especially on top on the sides but the bottom was so wound up I thought I would do more damage than good if I touched it so I just put it in the pot around and inside FF Ocean Forest soil. Should I have been more thorough with loosening the dirt ? I'm wondering if I should take it out and do it all over again, suggestions???

I also have some Happy Frog Bat Guano High Phosphorous and Big Bloom but I didnt add any yet as I wanted to give the transplant about 4-7 days to take hold before adding nutes and inducing flowering. When should I add these nutes?

No because you already caused transplant shock do it again and you find yourself with a hermie when you flower. Honestly I do not use time released amendments because its hard to predict their outcome on variety of strains. I use to in past and it seemed like I was correcting too many problems such as salt lockout or overfertilization.

why would you try to remove all the old soil ?

I just shake it a littel and put it in the new hole/pot ..

Also, I never ever mess with the roots. It is shocking enough to be pulled from the pot and stuck in another hole. No need to break up the root ball or anything like that. She will take care of her roots. I would get some vitamin B and give her a watering with it.

I think FF ocean forest has nutrients in it. I'd be real careful about supplementing more.

I dry them out, prepare a hole in the new pot soil so I can slide the old pot in and out with ease, then I pop the plant out of the old pot, like an ice cube, I touch nothing and slide her down in the hole I have already dug. Never lost a plant of any type, never saw even the slightest bit of stress out of any plant oof any type at all. I also use happy frog this grow and it is doing great.

yea do as Ppl. tells you .. slide here out carefully and pop her in to the all ready prepard hole ..

tho I do use a spray .. to mist the hole and the old soil/root ball gently before I pop it in .. just clean temperatet rain water .. with a drop of kelp/root power in it ..

I not only break up the clumping I lay the resulting veil of roots out to help her. Additionally after she is growing again I use a sharpened weed puller to push through the root mass to cut roots. Same principle as the new fabric smart bags. Cut a root and it forms 2 to 4 new tips.

You are correct on the FF OF and the nutrients. None needed for 3-4 weeks in this soil.

Damn, if you insist on changing soil (???) even to the rootball here's what you do....
Get a 5-gallon bucket (no holes) or bigger and run 3 or 4 gallons in it. Gently lower the naked plant into the
(warmish) water and slowly swirl the plant until all the roots sparkle white. That's how my hydro
buddy does it as he starts them in dirt and moves them to hydro when they are 6-8 inches.

Good luck but don't do that again, BigSteve.

Big Steve, I have never lost a plant doing it that way. But I am never in a hurry, I have the new planter ready including a proper depth hole and a huge can of fill soil. I layer her roots gently in stages and cover with slightly dampened nute free soil. But then I was an operating room nurse in a Level I trauma center for a long time and ER for 17 years before that. A bare plant rootball is not that intimidating to me. Considering. Good advice for the unskilled and inexperienced though.

  • I changed soil bc Im noob and when I potted it I used Scotts premium potting soil WITH miracle grow perlite, both with time released nutes and I started seeing some burn so I didnt want to transplant into same soil that was hurting plant. I had to transplant anyway because the container was too small and I wanted to make sure I correct any issues while I still could. I didnt like usin the Scotts to begin with
