Hey all I have a NL and a Swiss Cheese. NL has lots of bud sites.. but SC not so much bud sites. What determines the bud sites? Is there anything I can do at this point? 2 weeks in flowering. Thanks.

Best thing I ever did was add cfl side lighting to my HPS cab, giving those lower buds more light made a significant difference in yield. So even if you can't increase your budsites, you can always make the existing ones fatter. :leaf:

or you can pinch the tops this will promote side growth and what not youll have many more tops

Look up (Low Stress Training) Which consist of using tie methods, very hands on.

OR you can TOP the plant..

2 methods of Topping or (High Stress Training) are FIM and Straight Forward Topping...
*Topping the plant is done at the 3-4 node once the plant has grown about 6-7 nodes...It tells the plant to stop growing up, And start producing bud lower on the main stem, Along with 2 new Main Colas!

*FIM- Is a bit tricky, The cut is made above the normal topping method. Instead of completely removing the apical tip, you are only removing half of it, looking like you "missed" the top. This can result in 3, 4 or even more tops from the location

Good Luck!

I wouldn't worry about the side growth to much. The vast majority of your yield will come from the cola and top portion of the plant. I wouldn't pinch off the top to encourage the side, I'd focus on the top growth. Your flowering spots are from the nodes, the branch splits will produce flowers. I don't like trying to trick plants it is a good way to end up with hermies. One thing you can do is wait until your plants have reached the end of the growing cycle and harvest the top portion of the plant leaving the bottom two thirds alone. Now drop your lights and give the lower buds some additional time with more intense light. Proper pruning and plant management will go a long way in making sure those flowers with potential will achieve their maximum potential. Paying attention early on will have far more effect then anything you do this far in to the grow. Good Luck

Topping of a plant occurs in nature, There is nothing unnatural about it... Trees do it all the time.

Depending on the genetics of the plant, Some will produce more bud sites and greater yields with proper LST or Topping..
*Some plants will produce the same yield topped or not.*

Without topping, You will grow a very nice Trophy Nug. Which will be mainly at the top half, getting the most light...

The branches out the side and bottom of the plant, wont have enough light and wont produce as much bud.. When you TOP or Train the plant, You allow time for the side branches to catch up and reach the main cola.
Allowing these branches to catch up will allow for even distribution of light. Wasted light is a bad thing.

Again not all plants respond well to topping, It is crucial you do some genetic research on the plant before testing techniques like Topping.
LST should work for most plants.

My mistake, I generaly think that when someone says "top" they are speaking of intentionally topping to increase the number of the central stalks. When growing outdoors I often use the FIM technique to dramatically increase the girth of the plant. When growing indoors I never top a plant. It has been my experience that splitting the stalks into two instead of a single cola doesn't result in additional yield. I know there are growers that believe in topping and do so religously. I have never scientifical recorded studies on this particular subject but might consider doing so. Would love to know what results you have had with which strains and which medium. It would be valuable information for any grower. Got to love growing this plant because we all have different results from the same technique. Cool Beans

Just want to point out. more budsites dont = more bud per plant.

The reason most people force more budsites its the setup they have.

say you are using cfls or a weak hps the light cant penetrate far so you can lst the plant to have wider plant versus a taller plant.

Its just like growing a tomato, if you pull of a few flowers you will have less bigger tomatoes. If you let all the flowers grow you will have more smaller tomatoes.

Same thing with bud size.
