UBs 4 colas questions/problems

Hi guys, I know the technique is pretty straight forward and I know where to cut (or do I? See red marks on the attached pictures. My understanding was to cut above the 2nd real node, without counting the one with the cotyledons).

The problem I'm facing is that my plants had a pretty hard time during the solo cup phase, I still can't figure out why. Since they are in their 1ga fabric pots, things are way better. So the bottom leaves, especially on the 1st real node (the single leaves and cotyledons already dies off...), are damaged. Now, if I cut the plant down above the 2nd node (the plant is building the 6th node right now), I will be left with 1 pair of damaged leaves and 1 pair of good leaves. What is bizarre is that the 1st and 2nd real nodes are grown pretty tight together and then it seemed to stretch...

Also, one of my plants is growing lots of suckers which are already pretty big. I need advice here, what should I expect if I follow through with this method?

If you need more pictures, I'll be more than pleased to provide them.

Thanks a lot!

you could top at the node above your red line and pull off the bottom leaves still giving you your 4 tops.

Oh, I never thought about that! So this would kind of "delete" the 1st true node? And when I transplant into the 3ga pots, I bury the stem so the plant builds more roots?

Should I remove the leaves AND the suckers (pinching of everything at the stem)? Also, how do you explain why the suckers are so big on the 3rd plant and not on the 2 others? Is this a normal behaviour?

Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Are you talking about the branches that will make your 4 tops as looking like sucker branches? It is normal for one set of fan leaves to be bigger than the other sets. At least for me.

Oops hit Post Reply by mistake. But yes you can repot deeper for more roots if you want to.

FWIW
I would top at the next node up, and after the recovery, remove the lower branches and growth.

Yes, I think that these are the branches that will become the new cola sites. I got this 1 plant, same strain as the 2 others, that has very developped auxiliary shoots on the 1st node and a little on the 2nd node. You can compare in the 2 pictures, one has very small aux shoots while the other has so big aux shoots that it already splitted. I don't understand what happened. Looks like the dormant buds were somehow already awakened?

Like some others have said, I would go one node above where your red line is. You can always bury the bottom nodes in soil instead of removing them.
I wouldn't remove aux shoots at this time. Top her, let her recover, and then you'll have a better idea what you want to do.
