Under watered seedlings?

Hey everyone,

First time grower here. I have got to say that this site has given me plenty of great advice! I've frequented other forums before (mainly for freshwater planted aquariums) and I can say that you guys are much friendlier and more willing to help than any others!

Now... for my question.

First Check out these plants in the back row of the picture

photo.JPG

I came home and these three were fallen over. The soil was also extremely dry, so I'm assuming this happened due to underwatering? I also read it could be due to the light being too far away, so I put the plants up closer to the light. Currently I'm only running a 24w t5 planted aquarium fixture and a 23w cfl on them.

Also the plants haven't stretched at all since i've planted them under the light, the stretching in those 3 was due to me leaving them in the dark too long.

I appreciate any advice you can give me! Thanks!

Plants love a little dark. You should go 20/4 for them. And unless they have root, (you didn't say)
There's really no point to water the soil because there's no roots do drink the water, and that will exculpate to rot. Mist them constantly, intill root established

Hey thanks for the info!

I'm not sure if they have root yet, but if I had to guess I would say they have. Any advice as to how to tell if they have root? I would say those 3 popped the soil about a week ago...

I'm pretty interested in bonsai and that's about the only way to grow plants I know (other than aquatic plants) and my bonsai love to be soaked in a tray of water until the top soil is moist... so I figured that would be okay for these seedlings. Guess I was wrong!

I'll go ahead and change my light to 20/4 also.

Mickey Avalon is the shit btw... gotta love Dirt Nasty too

dunno what the guy up there is talking about lol keep soil moist let it dry out on the top then rewater they look like there stretching for the light put the light a bit closer but not too close for the heat to burn them keep a fan on them to strengthen and if they keep failling over repot them with the soil all the way up with only 1 inch of the top part of the plant poking out... if not use match sticks to prop them up theyll be fine

Ahh I see.. fuck with the new guy eh? Ha.. It's cool man. Karma and all that...

Thanks for the advice. I have a fan on them and I saw that sticky at the top about replanting stretched seedlings... which I plan on doing.. BUT I swore it said to wait until ~4th set of leaves come in...? I'll just read through that again.

Thanks again for easing this neurotic mind of mine!

While I am obviously in no position to judge who's advice is the best, I did ask you some follow up questions that you didn't answer, and instead decided to call another friendly person a faggot...

If I had any reason to think your advice was worth following, it is surely gone now. I wish you the best of luck.

ok i just said i dont know wat ur on about dude dont be rude about it this isnt a competition where here to help eachother out even of they dont have a root you allways keep soil moist u know like when u germinate a seed? it allways has a root unless its still a seed.... sorry that your so rude i hope u can fix that one day mate.... urm i dunno if u was on about me missing a question but if your on about the soil being to dry it isnt ideal but it is fine aslong as you water them as soon as you notice or itisnt too late plants like to be misted once a twice a day its like rain plus the plant soaks up the water off of its leaves within minutes.... some like to mist never and some like to mist every 3 days u can just see and know with experience and time do ur own thing also never mist during flowering unless u have to

HAHA! That's not how I work mayne.. I had to take care of that piece of shit first, maybe he wasn't to you. But he was not friendly and disrespected me.
Business first, pleasure later. Now on to you're questions..

I've had roots in 7 days. It depends on strain. I don't know what you have?
Typically 2-3 weeks at most, maybe never if you don't take care of them.
Like I said, I never watered the soil because that's how dad did it. And it's worked everytime.
Another thing about the light: depending on how tall you want you're plant, that's how much dark time you give, medium in 20/4 tall in 18/6
Never do more then 9 hours (donb see who would) because that fires off flowering stage

....... Okay well next time. Don't sit there and say, "well I don't know what he's saying, but this is how you do it" just ask what I meant, how I did it, I'm not sayin you were wrong. Because that's probably how you grow. But like I said that's how I do it, so that's how I said it

Actually.. Before sog I'd water every 4 days, because plants like having dry soil at one point. Water, wait till dry, wait a bit, give it water. Plants love it.

"might help" yes'
Cfls can touch the plant. It doesn't matter

yeah i know they like a bit of dry soil but not dry all the way throught they like it to be moist still on the lowerpart of the pot and for the first few inches to be dry seedlings love moist soil too you can keepit moist for the first 1-2 weeks with no problem... not soaking wet... just lil bit moist

Please quote me when I said leave the soil dry for the whole grow??
What I said was there's really no point to put water in the dirt because there's no roots to drink the water. If you mist the plant I'm sure you'll get some water in the soil. But don't dump the water in there come on???
