Uneven Germination?

This is my first grow, and already I'm stumped... Planted 50 bag seeds (don't know what kind) in a germinating tray w/ humidity dome, soil ph is at 7, in indirect sunlight. (Pre-soaked seeds overnight in lukewarm water first, nothing else)Everything I read, suggested I would see life in about a week. Well, day five (yesterday) I check and poof, 3 plants already about 3 inches tall, 2 more about an inch, nothing else. Today the first three already have their first set of true leaves. There are no more sprouts yet. So am I doing somthing wrong, or can all the rest not be viable, or am I just being too impatient?
If there is a chance for more yet, do I leave the dome on still irregardless of the tall ones, or take it off and hope for the best ? (The directions said to take it off when seedlings are an inch tall)

They could easily be non-viable. What to do is the problem with so many plants in a single area where variables have to be controlled for all of them at once. I'd take the dome off - I say they either sprout or they don't.

Here is my current setup. They are in cups that you do not have to remove the seedling from when you transplant, the root grows right through it - you just cut them apart and plant 'em. So would you go ahead and cut out the good ones now, or keep them all together for a bit longer?:?

You have to go and pick out the good seeds from the bag before you throw them all into germination. Any seeds that are green or white already won't germinate, any seeds with even a small crack in the husk from mishandling won't germinate either.

Good info to have, thanks. I wasn't sure that's why I planted so many. Still, I thought there were at least 20 that looked good, the middle three trays got the ones I thought looked best - and it seems like more than five should have sprouted.

With bag seed you always have to look at it as any progress is good progress, there's no greater gamble you could find in a casino that can compare to using bag seed.

what kind of soil is that?
It looks not so good....

try somthing like 50% peat moss and vermiculite/pinebark/perlite, works well for me.

You need to spend time and read the stickies in the noob section, it will save you some time. Trust me your on a long road on your first, Im still waiting on my first gro 2 finish flowering.

It's a mix, half Miracle Grow Garden/Vegetable mix (organic material, sphagnum peat moss, and manure) and half dirt from my yard, because I was too excited and didn't read the bag as well as I should have before I bought it. :-? Well that, and I was kinda standing in the store, surrounded by soil and not seeing anything I remembered being recomended here, kinda going "duhhhhhhh..." without a single employee there who knew jack about gardening. lol What I ended up with was meant to be a half and half mix for inground use.

Thought I did all right with the little cups though, peeps here say transplanting is a big shock for the little ones right? But these cups, you don't have to pull the seedling out of, just cut 'em apart and plant the whole thing, so less shock to the new roots.

Im not picking on you, but growing weed takes more than your back yard soil and some half assing, you gotta put more pride and work into what ya do.

WTF is your malfunction? To start with - I didn't ask for your opinion on my dirt - I answered you out of politeness. As seen from the pics, other than some stretching due to my original placement of them, and being ready for transplant, they are more than healthy.
I do read - perhaps you, yourself, should take another look in the "Noob" section, still being a first time grower yourself...

Backyard dirt, if used properly and prepared beforehand, can in fact work just fine.

Lastly - do us both a favor, and follow through on this threat. Your answer was not helpful - not even constructive criticism, just basically insult. I'm not a "silly" child - sorry kid, I don't need your brand of help.

I do welcome any comments or helpful criticisms without the insults.

hey Doe, your first grow is almost like a flash back to my first grow, lol.
In regards to your backyard soil it is pretty sketchy, there's no way of know the NPK values or the PH. while it is possible to grow with it, it would take some experience reading the plants to know what nutes it needs and what needs to be flushed. Don't be afriad of MG soil or any of the premixed, pre-nute soils alot of people myself included have done exceptionally well with them... just DO NOT feed any ferts what so ever for the first 1 month or so. It's better to keep it simple your first time around and just be happy with a plant that lives.

Are you growing Indoors or Out?

I did check the ph levels w/ my soil and water together before I popped the seeds in there. The ph started, and is holding steady, at 7 - a tad high, I know, but it isn't going up, and they seem to be doing well. I live on a working farm, great soil, good well water. I'm growing indoors, no nutes on em yet, no plans to feed them any for awhile. I didn't plan on keeping them in this mix, just wound up with it by mistake and thought since I could make it work for a week or two, might as well.
I'll be transplanting them on Thursday, I don't know what soil yet - I've looked at Wal-Mart, Culvers and Earl-Mae so far, and not much luck with the soils you guys recomend most. What would you choose from one of those three?

Just raise the other grow medium to make all the plants at the same height.Nothing ever goes according to plan in this world so you have to compensate to get the plants the same height.Make sure if you are doing a.s.o.g.method but the smaller plants are bang under the lights whitch will be no higher than 6 ince of the tops.Once the plants have at least 2 set's of true leaves it is time to put them in the bigger lighting room have the lights about 1 and harf foot of the tops for first week then lower to 6 ince of the tops second week.This may sound mad but you will get alot more yeild of plants with tighter internodes.Water once a week at most but wet them through when you do this.
