Using MH and HPS Lights in Combination

Oh look! A clown!!

What I said is factual. Lower wattage HID lamps(150, 250, 400) are inefficient when compared to larger lights(600, 1000), with 600s being the most efficient of SE HID. They're just a notch above florescent in terms of efficiency.

And watt for watt, current LEDs completely outperform HID lights. That's a fact. I know that it chaps your vagina to hear that, so I guess, sorry?

Nothing about what you said pisses off anybody, as most of the people who read your post will simply laugh at you. Thank you for bumping this though - it's raining all day here and I need something to occupy my time.

BTW - Your bike is also inefficient. Tee hee!
I agree HID lights may be more inefficient, but the 400 HPS is by no means garbage. I have personally seen it outperform LEDs that were higher watts. My experience is more reliable than your piss poor opinion. I really don't care what you think. I have seen results for both, and I know for a fact HPS is far better for flowering than LED. As far as inefficiency goes, who cares? What business is it of yours if someone pays a little higher on their electric bill to get far more yield?

I don't care if your fag fan boys laugh at me moron? Are you kidding? As far as I am concerned, you are a self-deluded moron, and on top of that, you are a bully that likes to put down people with other opinions than your own. What is so pathetic, is that you are so wrong, I am laughing at what a fool you are, so I guess we can all join in in laughter together!

From what Ive read, photons are what matters more than full spectrum.

IMHO your better off just getting Hortilux HPS bulbs regardless of wattage. They make everythng from 250w-1000w.... Ive use every type of Halide, and HPS, and the best performance has come from the Hortilux bulbs.
A 1000w Hortilux HPS is 1600 umol.

The Hortilux bulbs are Blue enhanced.

The Hortilux bulbs will not cause plants to stretch excessively because of the extra Blue ect. The most compact plants Ive ever seen in 45 yyears of using HID has come from Hortilux HPS bulbs. They are also the most reliable.

Ushio does make a Single Ended 1000w HPS that is 2100 umol but Ive not used it, and you would need to keep it at least 38 inches above the canopy, but it looks to be one hell of a single ended bulb.. 500 more umol than the Hortilux but the same wattage. Its as powerful as most Dual Ended HPS bulbs. They also make a 400w-600w-1000w bulb.
Ishio are also Blue enhanced.

So, it would seem this whole "2 to 1 ratio" thing is just a bunch of bullshit! I get nothing but a shitstorm over which is better LED's or HID's, or else, a bunch of alternative suggestions. I appreciate the responses but nobody is really addressing my original question.

Ill agree that the Hortilux bulb does reduce stretch, currently running two same clones the led one has stretched a lot more.

Question for you, how long in your opinion does the Hortilux bulb last?

If I run them 24/7 I change them every 70 days. If I run them 12/12 I change them every 2 flowering cycles. Thats about every 1700 hours. They may last longer than that, but I like to make sure I get maximum performance.

I run 480 watts wit Maxisun, Elevated Lighting and HLG Boards where I ran 850 watts of HPS in the same space.

With duel arc bulbs the lifetime is limited by the MH side.

I haven’t bought a bulb in 8 years.

the 2 to 1 ratio sounds perfectly logical to me.

If you are a legal grower and are allowed to grow 6 plants, do you grow 6 little plants under LED's or 6 trees under HID's? Your answer will determine your income.

Derp. You poor idiot.

I've spent the last few years switching out my HID fixtures in my flowering rooms. I used HPS in flowering for decades. I'll give you two examples.

1) In one of my flowering rooms, a 4x8, I pulled the two 600 watt HIDs out and replaced them with 2 480 watt bar LEDs. I reduced wattage by 250, plus an additional 100 watts by eliminating the inline fan that was pulling air off of the hoods. It's also quieter with one less fan, which is a bonus. I've increased my final weight by 4 to 6 ounces. Not a significant increase in weight out of a 4x8, sure, but I did it with 300 less watts. Added bonus - 2 less Hortilux bulbs I have to purchase annually.

2) My last 600. After growing with them for so many years, I was keeping this one around I guess out of nostalgia. I finally pulled the trigger and decided to go with one of the HLG lights - a 600 watt unit. So, my electricity didn't go down. But what did change were my numbers. With the strain I run in there(GG4/Widow cross), I was consistently hitting a pound, with my best result being 18oz. Now, with the exact same wattage, I consistently hit 20oz in there, with my best result being 22oz.

It's okay that you're a dinosaur who doesn't understand current LED tech, but don't act as if you do. It just makes you look silly. If you want to pay more money to get less yield, well then party on, Wayne. BTW - When you used the words "fag" and "bully" in the same paragraph, did you do it with a straight(see what I did there) face?

One last thing - a 315 will stomp all over a 400. Neener neener.

Hmmmm. That does sound impressive if all that is true. I will admit, I haven't tried the latest current LED tech, other than a spider farmer which works great for veg. I have seen some pics that don't look like they are that great, but I have seen some pics of stuff people did with HIDs that didn't look that great either. A lot of it is the grower experience, but if that much electricity could be saved, and no cooling needed, that would be great.
. Fair enough. If it is true, that would be worth switching over, no doubt!

Money saved on bulbs over the years would add up too, I just wonder how much a unit like that costs (the 480 watt bar), and how often you would have to replace it. The cost benefit compared to the old magnetic ballasts that run forever it seems?

Hey man, I am sorry I interrupted your post. I don't know that much about it, but I believe by mixing the Metal Halide and HPS in those ratios would work out pretty well. It would probably be similar to using a Hortilux HPS bulb which has some blue in the spectrum like the Metal Halide? I think those ratios sound pretty good. If it was me, I would just give it a try and see what happens, I don't think you could go wrong. I like the idea of using the low watt lights too that you can move around and maybe don't put off so much heat.

My apologies if I ruined your thread, I was really interested in the topic, sorry to sidetrack it like that.

I've never done it but know people that have. They seem to have been happy with the results. I just use the Vivosun HPS bulbs for flowering and they do a good job and I don't get any excessive stretch. They have an enhanced spectrum and are 1/4 the price of the Hortilux. I've used both. There was never any real noticeable difference in final yield or quality. But I wasn't paying that much attention.

I would just ignore those telling you to just trash your HID lights and go with LED. You can grow great weed with HID's. People have been doing it for decades. Maybe those expensive LED's are better but for many it's not worth the cost of upgrading and then having your HID equipment just collecting dust. I have more than enough money to buy the most expensive LED light on the market but why? My current 600 watt HID already does more than I need it to as far as yield and quality.

The my LED light is better than your HID argument is completely flawed. For one, LED's might be more efficient but it could take years in power savings to realize any savings. Less heat is also a flawed argument. Many of us want the heat as we grow in garages and other places that are not heated and the heat is welcome. LEDs may be better in some aspects but not as good in others. It's going to depend on your situation.

Pay no attention to those out there that want to try and denigrate those of us that use HID's. It doesn't matter what they think. If you're growing with HID's, they do what you want, and are happy with the results is ALL that matters. Don't even give those that spent 3-4 times more on their LEDs than you did on your HID's another thought. If they're so worried about your grow and want to just push LEDs because that's what they use then tell them to buy you an LED or shut up.

Give the 2 HPS and 1 MH a try and see if you notice a difference.

Happy growing :weed:
