Hey guys, i'm really considering just getting up and going to Canada for the year after xmas. I'm just bored in Ireland, no work, no money and i'm sick of college tbh. Just want to get away for a while. I was thinking Vancouver, looks like an amazingly beautiful place. I just have a few questions to you guys that hail from this part of the world. How much could I expect to pay for rent? I know thats like asking how long is a piece of string!! I'm not looking for anything to fancy, i would happily share with a few people and once i have a roof over my head and its safe is the main thing. Is food expensive? Eating in/out? I eat alot lol!! Any particular parts that you guys would reccomend? Im really looking to go and have some fun, im not going to work the whole time. Im dying to go snow boarding and just explore a bit but ideally i want a base camp over there. Also I imagine I wont have any problems getting my hands on some smokey smoke?
If some wonderful Canadian could take a couple of moment to enlighten me it would be HUGELY appreciated. Merci Beacoup :) (i think thats right)!!

I don't live in vancouver but I have family who does. It's VERY expensive. Like $1000+ a month for a 1 bedroom. But I'm sure the jobs there are adjusted to reflect that. Plus you can't just move from one country to another and get a job. You need to apply for a work visa, and it only lasts for a certain amount of time. I've travelled across Canada, food seems to be generally the same price give or take a little bit in terms of grocery food. Not sure about restaurants, never really gone to them

As for weed, its VERY easy to get weed or any drug for that matter. I couldn't tell you specific spots but from what I hear they are extremely liberal with weed, cops just don't care at all about it. You could blow smoke in a cop's face and they wouldn't do anything. Well maybe they would cause thats pretty dickish, but you could smoke up in front of a cop and they wouldn't care.

Check webehigh.com for specific spots

Ah yes, I'm fully aware of the situation in regards to visa's etc. Yes I don't think it would be feesable for me to get a place by myself, I think sharing would be best.
Thanks for the quick reply.

Also theres a cool looking place to smoke at vancouver seed bank's location(872 East Hastings St.). They don't sell weed but they have stuff like vaporizers and they do things like movie nights etc in the back room. Just a general hang out spot to smoke without anyone knowing

right in vancouver it's expensive like nusky says, (you'd probably be looking at $800+ CAD/mo. even to share a place).
there are many many less expensive suburbs, with varying degrees of convenience. with the skytrain, you can live 50km outside of vancouver and still get downtown in a reasonable amount of time, but i wouldn't want to live in any of those suburbs. (if you talk to the people who've lived in those areas since before the skytrain went in, they'll all tell you that property crime skyrocketed soon after it went in).

if you're into winter sports, you might want to look into the North Vancouver area... (North and West Van are both on "the north shore", where the local ski hills are). if you can work here, maybe you can get a job on a ski hill? most of the ski hills offer free passes/discounts for their staff.
fyi, n. van is a LOT cheaper than w. van (w. van is where the old-money swells live)....

also....

have you considered the snowbunny life in whistler? you could get a job either on the hills or in the surrounding village and just spend the whole winter snowboarding..... i think mtv or muchmusic has a reality show about whistler snow bunnies (forget what it's called)...... it's just board/party/board/party/occasionally sleep it off/board/party up there.
which i hear is true of most of the major resorts too..... plus, this wee corner of bc isn't the only great skiing around here.... lots of our olympian snowboarders come from places like revelstoke and fernie.

Thanks very much Mellokitty, i really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.
Im not familiar with Whistler snow bunnies but i'm going to check it out.
I don't really want to work, well not full time, maybe a few days a week, but thats it LOL!! I would have to get a working Visa which they have stopped handing out this year so i would prob have to wait till halfway through next year to get over. The other option is just to go over on a holiday for 3 months with a few quid to keep me going, see how i like it and if all is well i was told i can sort out the visa from over there. It's really just an idea at the moment, but im liking the sound of it so far. Was looking up flight's today which aren't that expensive for around Jan. Ill have a think about it over the next few days. Thanks again.

VANSTERDAM is great for stoners, terrible for cost. you can move to surrounding cities, maple ridge, langley, even coquitlam can have very desent prices and its about half hour from vancouver, plus tyou get the RCMP not the VPD, who are corrupt and dont follow the laws themselves.

It's all relative i suppose!! The rent on my previous apartment was 2200 euro split between me and a friend. Granted it was a decent pad and the ladies loved it but it wasnt anything amazing in the slightest. I was really paying for the location.

DAMN where do they live?!?!?! i need to find something for $1000 /month..... my mother lives in Surrey (Greater vancouver) and we are paying $3500/month for a 4 room / 2 bath....... 1300 Sqft total...

Marijuana: $200 / Oz
Housing: $1200+ / month + Utilities
Food: $500 / Month per person

Vancouver is a VERY Expensive place to live. you better have some MAJOR experiance in whatever you do, your going to need to put someone out of a job to take theirs to be able to live here..... believe it.
