Various beginner questions

I’m preparing a grow tent, and have a few questions. I’m going with a dwc hydroponics setup.

does my grow tent exhaust/fan have to point outside? It can get to 0 degrees Fahrenheit in winter, so it might be better to avoid this if possible. My exhaust is on the right side of my tent, towards the top. If I can avoid going outside, Should I have the exhaust pointed straight outward, or upward? Does it matter?

If I point it outside, is it likely my neighbor (in a duplex) would smell it? I have a carbon filter inside my tent hooked up to the fan, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t entirely eliminate the smell. It seems some strains (northern lights?) smell less than others, are there any strains you recommend that don’t smell as much? Conversely, is there any very smelly strains you recommend I avoid?

I purchased a silencer for my fan, and just as a test I set my air pump inside it (it was still able to intake air, and it seemed to quiet it down. Currently I have my air pump hanging from the grow tent, and I heard it reduced vibrations, quieting it. However has anyone tried using like acoustic foam to absorb sound? I’m thinking I’ll set it in this microphone box, and put more foam on top to try and absorb sound (while still allowing sufficient access to air). Has anyone tried something like this?

Silencer:
VIVOSUN 6 Inch Noise Reducer Silencer for Inline Duct Fan [Couldn’t post link, you’ll have to search for it]

Microphone box:
TroyStudio Portable Sound Recording Vocal Booth Box - |Reflection Filter & Microphone Isolation Shied| - |Large, Foldable, Stand Mountable, Super Dense Sound Absorbing Foam| (Small Size) [Couldn’t post link, you’ll have to search for it]

My tap water, after filtering it with a carbon filter, should have no chlorine/Chloramine correct? And it comes out at about 630ppm. Should I avoid using it? Or since it’s been filtered, is it okay to use? Maybe for clones I’ll use store bought water, because I’ve seen that they need a lower ppm correct?

Is there a “test plant” that you recommend? Seeds seem to be a little expensive, and if I’m going to mess up, I rather it be on something cheaper. For example, is mint a good test dummy? Allows me to test the smell being filtered, and I can attempt to clone it.

Do you have any tips or are there any common mistakes you want me to avoid?

I have a room dedicated to growing. My box doesn’t have a filter yet (will soon) but i just vent into the room and keep the door closed. You could run it into your attic if you’re worried about the cold maybe!

I’m currently growing a bagseed for my first grow and it’s been awesome.
Check out seedbanks online for freebies, I’ve seen some good ones from Barney’s.
A lot of seeds a was looking at were about $30 for 3 plus one or two freebies of different strains!
Rosemary smells a lot, maybe that or mint like you were saying
I grow in soil so I’m clueless about dwc/hydro set ups

You dont ever want to vent hot humid air into a cold attic. EVER.

if your tap water is actually 630 that is going to fuck with you. Those ppms count towards your total ppms.

Great point. You also want to use insulated duct if you decide to run it out of your attic. I have one of my fans venting out a gable vent in my attic now and my room is a lot less humid. I don't even need to run my dehumidifier anymore. I am in Colorado though, so it's pretty dry. My bedroom is at 16% right now, veg tent at 14%, and flower room at 22%. The living room I'm in now reads LL, which means below 10%. Ok update, it just hit 11% in my living room, lol.

Right on the other guy said to exhaust into the attic which you dont ever want to do. And since we are stoners dont need to confuse this post and exhaust into an attic with insulated ducting either

You are doing it right venting out the gable end but my point I want to say is that in the winter the hot humid air going up into a cold attic through an uninsulated duct will have the reverse effect like a cold drink on a hot day ..you will get condensation on the inside of your ducting if you dont have it insulated like your doing. so PadawanWarrior your doing it right with that ducting.

In the winter time I just vent into another part of the house. I did some thought about air circulation and am ok. I dump here pull air from there its all good.

if its the correct spectrum? does it have a 3500k or something like that on it. or did it say grow bulb on it. I actually dont remember the right number but the 3500k number is what you need to learn about for growing.
you have a bulb that uses 24 watts/power usage and it is rated at 1550 lumens /brightness....whats the spectrum?
It has 2700k

I have a led light 14watts lumens 1400. 4000k is this better to use for seedlings thanks for the reply.
upon further review I realized i didnt know wtf I was talking about, but you do need a grow bulb and not just any bulb. I was thinking of a different thing and havent figured it out. Right now I would say go with the 4000k bulb. Thats just a gut feeling with my limited brain knowledge. And I would just go get a grow bulb that you know without a doubt is the bulb you need.

I think it is, but then again, the meter I bought was $40 for ph/EC/ppm/Temp, and the instructions were written in Hindi I think I’m not sure... back to amazon it goes, and I’ll try again with a Bluelab combo meters, instead of cutting corners to make sure

Do u think Demineralised water is good to use for seedlings thanks.
i going to say no as i dont know what that is exactly sounds like distilled water you buy from a store so then you would be flushing your plant every time you watered it and you dont want to do that.

with that said I going to say yes if its just distilled water that you add about 250 ppms of veg nutes to it. ph to 6.5

I didn’t read through all the post, but I see you are planning a grow.. have you already acquired seeds? I have a decent number of Bodhi packs left over that I won’t be using due to space and time restrictions.. I always get carried away when I buy my seeds haha..

Anyhow, if you havn’t gotten your seeds, and are ok with regular photoperiod seeds(non-feminized, non-auto-flower) I can send you a pack or two of some great seeds!!

Ps-I work incredibly long days 7 days/week so I generally only check RIU around 2-5 eastern time once or twice a day. But if your interested, I make my post office runs on Mondays.. and also, I’d much rather send them to a location that is NOT your personal residence, simply for reassurance and anonymity.. it is your decision though. Hope the grow goes great!!! It’s a very easy hobby to fall in love with
