I RECENTLY UPGRADED MY VEG SET UP TO A DUAL 600W DIGITAL SYSTEM, COME TO FING THE ONLY MAKE HPS BULBS IN 600W OR YOU GOTTA GET A CONVERSION BULB ($100) NOT A BIG DEAL, BUT THE SET UP CAME WITH 600W HPS BULBS, AND THEY SEEM TO BE WORKING FINE.....

QUESTION:

IVE ALWAYS BEEN TOLD TO USE M.H. LIGHTS IN VEG, BUT THE HPS IS ALMOST TWICE THE LUMES FOR THE WATTS USED, IS THE COLOR OF THE LIGHT GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN GROWTH....?

HPS will be perfectly fine. MH is recommended only because the light it produces has more of the spectrum that is most useful to the plant during veg. T-5's would be ideal, but since you already have the HPS's you're best off sticking with what you've got.

mh has more blue that veg likes hps has the red flower likes but a lot of growers use hps for the whole grow.not that big of a deal i would not spend $100 on a conversion bulb.how many plants you putting under the 600w?

Honestly, I think you'll get better results with the hps than the mh conversion bulb. I can't believe that a more usable spectrum for the plants makes up for an almost 50% loss in lumens. If your plants are stretching too much for your taste, move the light closer.

It's not always about lumens!

Many growers go to great lengthes to acheive a "dense - bushy" plant. That is what "Metal Halide" will give you! The "Bluer" spectrum of the MH will minimize the internodal length (keeps the plant compact). HPS will work just fine for veg, but the plants tend to be taller!

i vegged and flowered under a 600 hps, and the plants were hella short and bushy with very tight node spacing, and didnt strech that bad in flower

I agree, but in this case it is. 60k vs 90k lumens is a pretty big difference. I'd really like to see some side to side comparisons between the two because I find it hard to believe that a bluer spectrum can make up for the 30k lumen deficiency.

Individual results may vary, but in general MH vegs more compact than HPS. That's why MH is "standard" for vegging and HPS is "standard" for flowering.
