Vermicomposting - a thing to consider

I know vermicomposting is the bomb but how did you get started doing it or how do you have it set up? I have seen all sorts of stuff online like people making bins out of weather treated wood with screen lids. The box is filled with leaves and stuff. They say you can put anything biodegradable in the bin and the wormies munch it.

LiveVibe... Vermicomposting is pretty easy. Your bin can be a Rubbermaid 5 gallon storage tote or make out of wood. Either will work. You can feed worms any biodegradeable matter, but on dairy, meat or spicy foods.

Wow green that Herman site was really helpful and easy to understand. I saw some stuff on TV and the web but it was not in normal people terms LOL. I am going to try it with the plastic bin. I guess the worms need to be ordered.

How come I see "earthworm castings" but the page says earthworms do not dig the box. Earthworm castings are the best shit I hear.

What kind of worms do you use? :?
 
Earthworms prefer living in the soil, like your yard or garden; because they borough deep. Redworms (aka - manure worms) are happy living under cow manure, so to them the box is a step up. Plus they don't mind crowding, earthworms do.

You can order redworms (composting worms) mail order or buy them as pan fish or trout worms at bait shops.

I am definitely going to try this one of these days.

I wish there was a way to do it with earthworms. I have heard amazing things about their shit LOL.

Yes, worms love the newspaper. To use it, take out all those colored or glossy pages (they equal toxic shit to Mr & Mrs. Worm), tear them into strips, moisten them & ring them out. They should be moist, not dripping wet. Drop them in your worm bin & Mr. & Mrs. Worm will do the rest. It provides both bedding & food for them.

Plus if you feed them the left over alfalfa dust / pellets from your rabbit feed (since, I read your starting a rabbit farm)- you get the added bonus of Triacontanol - a naturally occuring plant growth stimulant found in alfalfa. my worm farm is my biodynamic compost pile! they don't eat the sports section! I give em organic nutes that the pile properly cooks...they live in my buckets 'til I dump the buckets...all the while aerating, and laying fresh castings! you can't get that in inert soilless media!

Yes Worms are great. Nothing made by Big-Agri or Big Hydro Fert Companies comes close to Nature. Worm Castings are a perfect soil amendment, perfect for starting plants and as a maintenance tea. Everyone who uses them is happy with the results. They are full of trace minerals & friendly bacteria / fungi.

Chookface... I'll take one later & post it. Worm Bins are easy to make, cheap and worth the effort. Rich, Organic Worm Castings are a great amendment.

Yes, I recycle everything. My used soil goes into the compost barrel or worm bin - or both. So, it just goes on and on - at the Ohsogreen Plantation...

I love worm juice/castings.I've moved house and just set up my farm with a 1000 worms,only the right worms will work,Tiger worms in Oz,Don't be scabby on something like this,this farm will do wonders,it will repat you 100 fold.ps,I use a ratio of 10-1 worm juice.

Surryman.... You are completely right about the payback. Having your own worm bin is a wise investment. Let the Kiwi's buy casting, we'll drink a jug, slap the rear of a nice looking Sheila and laugh at um'.....

I did Oz back in the 80's, Fremantle, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. Your country is Great. I smoked some Chronic Bud in Perth - World Class. Drank some rich, cold beer - call Red Rock in Sydney and met / entertained some lovely Sheila's. The women were so beautiful, in fact, I almost jumped ship and stayed. I was a merchant sailor back then.

I like that term, "don't be scabby", heh. So, is that 10 parts water to 1 part worm juice? If so, that's gotta be some POTENT shit, yeah?
 
hey, i am a worm farmer kinda guy and i will be doing a little test soon
i am going to grow in 100% worm castings
also i am going to grow in wormcastings, chicken shit, and eggshells, all from my yard.
it will be a side by side comparison, i might also add two more setups with the same mixtures plus 1/3 perlite
should be cool

i also compost my dog shit in a seperate spot, i think i may truy groing in that too.
