I think vivosun does a great job making a budget HPS system.

Personally have the 600w vivosun. For $150 or whatever, it comes with a lot!! It has never once given me an issue. The bulbs are very bright, the ballast is super quiet and I mean... it’s doing a killer job!

I've been using the Vivosun 600 watt for years. No issues at all. Hood, ballast, and both MH and HPS bulbs for under $150. It's well worth the money. It replaces a $600 LED :bigjoint:

You can't go wrong with either.
I'd go for the new upgraded Vivosun with the better cooling fan.
Vivosun bulbs work just as well as any others btw.
But if you want a 6k MH you'll have to get an Ipower bulb. Vivosun MH is 4200K.

Been using 1-600w vivosun, 1-600w Ipower and 3x-1000w Ipower for 1.5 years with no problems.

If you upgrade your hood at some point, I highly suggest Sun System reflectors.
Best of luck!

watch your heat. I started with a 250 now at 600 and it created enough heat issues that I had to make some changes in the room. i bought the vivosun 600 with digital ballast

What's the size of your grow space? I went straight for a 1000w HPS and turned her up to super lumens. It's in my 5x5 tent. I previously used 600w in a 2x4 space years ago. Am enjoying the difference between 600w and 1000w now that I'm getting back into growing. Seems to be much brighter. Would imagine the same would be true going from 400-600w

It was my understanding to only use the superlumens when your bulb
is at the end of its useful life...

As with everything, you'll find many differing opinions on that subject. Manufacturers of the bulbs and ballast systems don't seem to warn against using the super lumens settings, and they'll warranty that equipment for a period of time anyway. Can't be that risky...

Some growers will also only use a bulb for a few cycles even though it's rated for 5x that length. Is a bulb not always near the end of it's useful life if you're only using a bulb for a few cycles?

So even if you doubled the rate of lumen loss on an HPS by using SUPER LUMENS. You'd still be at 5k hours to lose 10% lumens. So a year and some daily in a flowering tent. Would bet that most HPS users are replacing those more often than that anyways...

You won’t be sorry either way. And as for the bulbs they did a bulb comparison a few years back and the ipower bulbs scored next to hortilux bulbs so you can’t go wrong for a 1/5 of the price. I’ve been using them for years.

I'm using "fusion bright" brand. Seems to be the house brand of a popular grow light supplier in Canada. Also their 6" cool tube with large reflector. Very happy with both the brightness, and the light spread. Although one of these days I'll invest in a light meter... Christmas is coming so who knows!
