You will most likely be disappointed by picking early lowers --- but I would recommend that you do it. (if you haven't already)
WHY?
1. - You might like it. --- The shorter, speedier buzz might be your thing. (Even a heavy Indica can feel speedy if harvested early)
---My Wife & I like to take one or two smaller main buds a week or so early. It makes for good date night smoke, but there's a sacrifice in potency, weight & duration of buzz.
2. - You might hate it. --- Now you'll know why YOU don't harvest before a certain point.
---Again with my Wife & I; we have learned where "too early" is, as well as "too late". My current crop is at least a week past the point that I used to pull a sample bud --- we learned what "too early" is.

3. - Either way - note your experiences and post it so the community can learn along with you.

4. - ENJOY! --- It's weed! Isn't that what it's for?

**I'm growing to have free recreational smoke, but also to help with medical conditions & old injuries that my Wife & I have from a half-century of living. So my growing goals, strain selection, & methods will be different from yours or others.
I harvest a little before some people - 5-10% visible amber trichomes - but I jar longer & cure slower - minimum 3 weeks before even sampling, 5-6 weeks seems to be optimum for my OG & Strawberry Kush.

Been there done that, if you've only got a few smaller plants I'd say wait, but if you've got a room full it's no biggie. Hopefully once this first big grow is done I won't be tempted with early growth because I'll have plenty left to get me through the next one.

How does yours compare to your local dispo?

As I mentioned, my Wife & I will take a test bud a bit before harvest as well, although I'm more disappointed each time.

I haven't taken any yet; but that's because I had a dwarf mutant plant that I chopped (plucked???) --- it was tiny, barely yielded 7 grams lol.
Weird, very leafy bud structure, BUT - it was healthy the whole grow and went deep burgundy as she finished. She also finished way ahead of her sisters.
Scent is minimal at the end of drying - what I do detect is fading vegetal (uncured) and a tart, sort of weed-ish note that improves daily.
Mild flavor - a bit sweet/tart. I've grown this strain since I started and haven't had a pheno/mutant like this yet, so it was a fun experiment.
--- I SHOULD have journaled it, but I kept thinking I'd cull it on the next watering...
Middle potency - really nice floaty body, mellow, but clear and not sleepy head. Not STONED, but a nice, low altitude high.
Not as early as the past, but still an early pluck IMHO.
This is most of the main top - too larfy & leafy, but a nice, unique smoke!

I found a nice easy fast way to sample early buds: pick only the light green or yellow Calyxes and vaporize them, don't use dark green anything for the sample. In a light bulb vape, the first few hit's tastes like fresh hash because the the trichomes are resting right on the hot glass, a dab rig would work for this also.
