Wanted to try a grow, so here we go... C99

This is my journal of 4x C99’s from Female Seeds. I grew one bag seed a few years ago and it turned out to be male. This is my second attempt, and I hope that I come close to the success of the other Cindy grows that are taking place here. I have done a lot of reading and trying to get as much knowledge from the posters here before I start asking questions that have already been answered. I put 4 seeds into drink cups filled with a seed starter mix and some EWC’s at a 5 part seed starter to 1 part EWC ratio. I saturated the mixture and placed the seeds 1/4’’ down and covered them up. Under four 4’ T12 tubes they went and I waited. Day 2 one came up day 3 another and about 12 hours later the last 2. 100% germination rate. So now I have 4 babies to take care of and in hindsight I’m wondering if I should have put two in cold storage for another day. Oh well, it’s done. I am taking the day the last two came up and calling that the start day. These photos were taken on day 3 according to that. I have already read about the SLOW nature of this strain so I’m going to try and be patient. These will stay under the T12 tubes until day 14 or so and then I plan to pot them up and start up the 400w MH for vegging. For flowering, I will put the HPS bulb in. My setup will be a 4x4 frame wrapped in orca grow film. I will be able to keep the area between 70-80 degrees with an oscillating fan. So far I’ve spritzed a little water on the top of the seed starter with a spray bottle; they are still pretty weighty from the presoak before planting. Advice, criticism, and general slamming is appreciated. I hope that I have put this in the right place to get exposure. Being a newbie, I wasn’t sure if I should go there, but with the other two C’99 grows that I’m following here, I thought that it would be a good place to compare. Thanks in advance.1.jpg4.jpg5.jpg2.jpg3.jpg

you did good, in my opion you dont need to wait 14 days to put under the other lamp i have put mine under as soon as they are up they will grow fast just be careful with heat from the lamp do to tender young plants. rite amount of heat and water and nutes they will grow like crazy and on week 3-4 you can flower if wanted to

Thanks, I am still getting the other space ready. I will consider moving earlier if they seem like they want to take off. I was thinking that maybe I could fill the cups with roots under the 4' cool tubes, pot them up, and then put them under the MH. I see from other c99 grows on here that some were able to flower after 25 days or so and another doing a scrog is in the 40's and still vegging.

Dragon, I am humbled that you are subbing this. Judging from your post count, I hope that I don't disappoint. Please give advice if you see me screwing up, I can use the expertise. I kept seeing the c99 strain in other posts and I really like a sativa so wanted to try it. The Female Seeds hybrid sounded choice so, away we go.

hell yeah i'll sub. This is a beautiful strain my friend.Give it time though the first few weeks can be frustrating ,even frightning ..it's easy to think you have messed it all up with this one ,only for her to turn around in a week or so and start shining ... i have a recommendation.. top her at the 5th node. That is ,after you have 4 sets of leaves ,cut off the 5th set... I know uncle bens technique is different ,but this is what i always have done and i always love the results..

Thanks for looking and following. I was going to top them, and to be clear, UB says between the fifth and sixth node. I understand that the cotyledons don't count so starting with the next set being 1, I was going to let 5 come up and top before #6. Is this what you mean? Are you saying top after 4 sets before the 5th or 5 sets before the 6th? I got the signature and photos fixed too; thanks again.

No i belive UB recommends waiting until the 5th or 6th nodes ,just so the plants roots are more developed and then topping at the 2nd for 4 colas and 3rd for 2 colas. But i don't do this .The cotyledons don't count ,the next set - the 1 blade set counts.

So i go 1 blade set ,then 3 blade set ,then 5 blade set ,then usually another 5 or 7 blade set and then cut the next set ,leaving only 4 remaining leaf sets.If you want to experiement and go to the 6th node ,go for it ,i will be watching intently to see if i should do it.. but my plant is topped at 5th.. maybe you should do some 5th and some 6th..?

And no problem,happy to help

Looks good great dane. I'm growing some C99 also I might be a couple days ahead of ya, but now much.

Sounds like you've got a good plan for things. There are many different techniques for topping, what puffdat is deiscribing with cutting at the fifth node is going to be more likely to create a very bush plant, or a plant with just 2 main tops depending on how you further did things. Here is an awesome thread about a great technique to get very nice even bushes with huge colas. I'm working on doing something similar to several of my girls now. The way uncle buck describes topping, is letting the plant grow out to 5-6 nodes to get strong, and then topping just above the 2nd node. This will result in a plant with 4 main colas, in your grow space this might be a great option. IT allows a fair bit of light right down though the middle to get nice even growth on all the colas. Any way just a few ideas, I know you said you had done a bunch of reading so you may already have a plan for all this also. Feel free to swing over and check out my Cindy, both of mine "mutated" right out of the seed, so I'm curious to see what happens.

Thanks TC, I appreciate the advise. I was thinking about topping 2 plants one way and the other 2 another way and see what happens. Hopefully I'll get lucky enough that all 4 do well and we can watch the results on here. I stopped by your thread and enjoyed the read. Your "pretopped" c99 is a first for me, I'm looking forward to seeing how she does. I wonder if clones from her would do the same thing? Sorry about the accident, I'm glad that you're healing and it wasn't more serious. As my wife says, "gardening is good for the soul".

Thanks for swingin by man, glad you enjoyed. I'm also eager to see how they turn out. I doubt the clones will top themselves, but i might get a surprise. I like the idea of trying a few different things man, thats how I've been over the years. I like to experiment with stuff, and see what differences I can notice. You'll find things you like and don't and develope your style of growing fro there. I'm no were near done experimenting with things. I've been growing the same way for a few years, but that may be changing over this next year.

Thanks for the rep TC, I will try not to disappoint. The clones topping themselves was an attempt at humor, but, could you imagine? One hell of a mother there!!!! This grow will be a good way for me to experiment with different things and I will take any suggestions.

I got it now puffdat. I was misunderstanding UB bigtime. Let the plant get some strength, and then cut above the 2nd or 3rd blade set. I think that would give me a heart attack. Have you ever topped that much and what were the results. If all 4 of these do well, maybe I could try one above node 2 but it would be difficult. Why don't you do this if I may ask, bad results? Thanks again for all your help; rep to you.

Ok, one photo from today, day 6. Slow growing and healthy looking. They stretched more than I hoped, but that has stopped. Maybe due to only 160 watts of fluorescent tubing. You can see that they are growing and the other half of the leaf set has come out. The area is kept at 75 degrees (+/- 2 ) and humidity is between 36-40 percent during light and down to 31 or so lights out. I use a cool mist humidifier during light and turn it off lights out. Oscillating fan has been going since day 1. I also add a little water to the pan that they are in, let it evaporate, and add some more. The cups are raised so the water just barely touches the bottom of them. BTW, rain water only; love my rain barrels. I did get a bluelab ph pen and will test the water when I start adding nutes. What do you think so far?6.jpg

Looking good still man. The stretch is from the low amount of light. I gotta suggest getting as much light on them as possible. Those floro tubes you can lower to almost on top of the plants they produce such low heat. I used tubes my first couple grows, not I use spiral cfls. I find I can cram more watts into a smaller space. In the first 4-5 pages of my journal I show the CFL fixture which I built 4 years ago, and have been using ever since. I'm able to run 225 watts concentrated into a 2x3 area, with next to no heat for like $25 plus bulbs.

As for the topping thing, I literally have topped plants in half with no adverse effects. I actually just did an UB top to a plant about 3 days ago, that was in 12/12 already. It hadn't started to flower I had only put it under 12/12 about 3 days earlier, but I wanted a clone from that plant. It has started to grow 4 nice little branches from the remaining nodes, and I expect to see sex in the next few days. It wasn't full mature when it went into 12/12 so it may take longer then the clones do. I'm certain it won't be a large yielder since it wasn't vegged long, and topped under 12/12 but I only put it in to replace a clone, and to sex it. Once I sex it I'll either pull it back out and reveg it, or just keep the clone I took off it. Thats one of the nice things about waiting till the later node and cutting it all the way back to the 2nd node, you can use the top as a clone to keep your genetics going.

These plants are very tough little plants most of the time. Some people are against to topping or pruning plants, I've never had issues over the last 7 years. These techniques can slow the growth for a few days while the plants redirect hormones to other parts for growth, but once they do they always take back off again.
