Warning no chlorine!!!

I've been reading around here about people cleaning with a mild chlorine solution in there hydroponics set-ups. It concerns me because it can be harmful to humans. Even in low amounts. We all mix nutrients and use pH-down or up. Sodium hypochlorite is the main ingrendient in bleach and phosphoric acid is in ph down. When mixed they create chlorine gas. And given most of us use small grow areas this can be hazardous to are health. I've even heard of some people using this to stop Pythium also known as root rot. And I can see someone getting harmed by this. I just want to warn people about taking care with these chemicals. Good luck

Well yeah I read this article http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00015111.htm here's some other information about bleach http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hypochlorite and here is the exposure rates and facts http://dhs.wisconsin.gov/eh/chemfs/fs/chlorine.htm I just don't think it is wise to put ph down in the res with 2-3 ppm bleach if all it is going to do is turn it to a gas. Plus it has a ph 11 so you'll have to add more acid to bring the ph into a good range. I know what fatman said but I don't want to play with this stuff. RO water is cheap and once you add acid to chlorine it turns to gas so how affective can it be? How many stories have you heard about tap water being a bad thing? And how many have you heard about RO Water? I've been using sm90 by Nutricare works pretty well not as good a bleach at killing Pythium. But if it harms you then no amount of smoke is going to cure you. I just want to warn others about these chemicals and to take care when mixing stuff together. Just my two cents Good luck

Chlorine in tap water evaporates out VERY quickly. .5-1 ounce of bleach in 5 gallons of water is a way to sanitize something AND make water drinkable in an emergency like a natural disaster. I think you're overstating the dangers a little but it's always good to know worst-case-scenarios.

What about if 1oz of chlorine evaporates in minutes and you're in there? Because the acid accelerates the process. I'm just warning people to watch what they mix because it can be dangerous to there health. I know most people are not going to run into this problem but it's good to think about what your combining. Thanks for the comment though.

For what it's worth, chlorine bleach, when allowed to evaporate, leaves nothing but salt.

chlorine gas needs to be in high doses to do real damage you breath more CL2 walking past a public pool than will evap from your rez

http://www.flairform.com/downloads/pythoff_commercial_label.htm just wanted to post this. Take a look where it states not to mix with acid. Half the strength of Clorox.
I read the warning. Seems to be saying that Pythoff(sp) is the equivalent of 2.5% chlorine and not to mix (directly) with acids. So dont mix it directly with acids or it will cause some gas. Mixing it in dilution (add pythoff to reservoir, let mix & add acid) should not cause a health issue.

people drink chlorine every day its in tap water, it evaps and you breath it everyday, in the shower, doing dishes, and anytime you run water. don't panic and don't try to spread the panic. you need to take several deep breaths of CL2 at over 1000ppm to die. 60-80 ppm can cause damage to your lungs with long exposure. so don't flash boil a gallon of bleach in a closed room, but a few ml in your rez won't hurt you
