Watching My Garden Grow

The cannas just sprouted last year after I had cleared the area for my 3 sisters garden. I transplanted it to a pot and thought it died. but it came back so I planted it in the ground where it is now. And up popped all the others! The flowers are so delicate a beautiful. I am hoping those are the seed pods so I can have a whole lot more cannas next year!

I am so glad about my pumpkins. Growing them for my daughter for Halloween. Her fave holliday. Good luck on your buttercup squash. I'm picturing a warm, rich, and comforting Autumn soup. mmmmm

i planted and had 100% non-germination of some "lumina" pumpkins. (they're WHITE. so cool. i wanted them for jackolanterns) so i'm a bit sad about that. i couldn't find it as a start anywhere either. *sigh*

there's some cool pics of "canna fruits" and seed pods in the wiki article about them:

Sorry bout the 'luminas'. I have seen those and they look hella cool. Almost like they would glow in the dark.
Thanks for the link. I will be checking it out later. Gotta go be taxi. I am my daughter's ride to and from work.

I harvested my first tomatoes! Besides the sungolds anyway. The two on the left are Cherokee purples and the one on the right is a black krim. they should be perfect by tomorrow. I am going to give all the ones on the plants another few days and then I am picking them all and taking the plants down. They are all becoming diseased and I am too busy with my girls to worry about it. Doing things way different next year.

Oh yeah, the other pics are of a cool spider up between the power line and the tree. I obviously cannot hold the camera still, but it looks really cool.:-o

grilled chicken with tortellini alfredo and a salad that I grew:lol:

cool info McPurp. Thanks! None of my cucs are dark. all the foliage is dark green but not the fruit. I think there are more to pick today, yea!
Yeah, I was thinking stink bug too. I will have to find and remove - don't want to crush and cause a stink! hehhehe
I bought all the ingredients at the farmer's market and made the sauce. My son is very much into permaculture. He is working on a farm in western PA.
Is it a mushroom farm? Just curious. We have a lot of mushroom farms here in Pennsylvania. Oh and the sauce pix looked yummy

Oh I think if you wanna propagate cannas you should divide the tubers they grow from. To collect seed and grow from those will take you several years before it flowers. I'm 99% sure it's a tuber. IDK. I never grew em but I'm pretty sure they aren't hardy here in PA. So they might have to be lifted in late fall. Love the display of cannas at Longwood Gardens in autumn.

Edit: it's a rhizome not a tuber.

Yeah, I was reading the link Kitty gave me. It says the seeds are used in jewelry making and some kind of instrument - like a rainmaker? Cool info. I will just let it keep propagating itself. it started with only one.

canna lilies are a lilium, right?

i guess a lot of liliums are hypogeal (sp?)... which means that after you plant the seed, it has to grow into a rhizome (bulb) underground, before it puts out an above-ground stem. apparently this can take a few growing seasons. this would also explain why my daylily seeds never came up  . they were pretty and shiny things, i wish i'd thought about using them for beadwork.

my black caLLa has already gone into hibernation mode. which is fucked up because summer finally arrived here last week. when i dug it up, it seemed to have a touch of root rot (which has now dried out and fallen off)... i have my fingers crossed it revives next year.

I hope it revives. That was one beautiful flower! Yeah, the seeds are little black round shiny things about half the size of a marble. I guess it couldn't hurt to plant them and see how many years it takes em?

apparently you want to "vernalize" them or they won't sprout.... make 'em go through an artificial winter by sticking them in the fridge/freezer for a month or 2.
