water not soaking in to soil properly

Hi, hoping for a bit of advice.

When I water my 6ltr and 11ltr pots filled with soil the water seems to runoff straight away (as though its not soaking into soil)

I let the pots dry out between watering and try and rough up the topsoil a bit to help it soak in.

The soil mix I use is mj specific canna terra pro +

Any tips, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Gonzo

i've had this problem before and it sounds like you let it get too dry before watering again and the soil kind of locks up on itself..

what i did was move them into a tub and turn on the water at a decent steady rate, but not too much, and move the plants one at a time under the running water and eventually the soil will re-wet itself and start to absorb the water..
from there, just try not to let the soil get too dry again and you should be back on track ime..

I suspect that your medium is moist and doesnt hold too much water since it is MJ specific, it is well aired. remove some soil from 1" deep soil and squeeze it, if it's moist, then you're good. you don't want to suffocate your roots. try bottom feeding, keep the plants sitting in a water tray and see if they sucked any water

A few drops - drops - of dishwashing soap in your water next time will act as a wetting agent for soil the same as for leaves and foliar feedings.

Thanks everyone. Spot on advice.

I think I have been letting it get too dry between watering. Gonna give them a really good dose of h2o and water a bit more frequently.

Worried about pockets of dry soil as I believe these become inactive areas in a way. Plants look healthy 3wks from switch dont want this to affect flowering stage

Like he said "Just a few drops".

What also works for me is "spraying" or "misting" the soil surface with a little water (just enough to moisten the surface - wait a minute or two (to let it soak in). Then apply a small watering (a cup, or so), again - let it soak in. After several minutes, water as usual!

Keeps the soil good and lets it dry out perfectly...and i water each plant a lil then sit a sec then water again till i see runoff

That's why I started watering 3-5 times over a two hour period instead of all the water at once. If you give the soil a chance to absorb the water more slowly it will hold a lot more water. One reason I'm looking at automating it.

I bottom water. Even my large 5 gallon ghot chili pots. They got too dry and water just ran out between soil and container leaving inner soil dry. I found a container I could sit it in completely. Then I filled up the outer container and let out sit until soil is fully saturated. No dry pockets.
