Watering question....

So, this is my idea...

There is a water source near the location I chose. I have experience in keeping pools at a constant level with piping.

Would this work:

I dig a ditch, like a french drain, I build and bury a pvc piping line from the water source *Under the water about 3-4 feet* to my grow locations (three 13.5 Gallon Trash Cans, I got them cheaper than the buckets... don't laugh haha) I would assume like it works in other instances this would force the soil to take water... it wouldn't take anymore water when the soil was full correct?

This is my second grow... I did well my first grow but I want to get a little more automated this time... not that I am lazy, just careful it is crazy around here now.

If not I am just going to do like last time, which was this:

Three(maybe six, if I buy 3 more)- 13.5 Gallon Trash Cans for plants.
One- 13.5 Gallon Trash Can for water (Buried in the dirt and covered)
One- 13.5 Gallon Trash Can with nutes (Buried in the dirt and covered)

For the record I haven't decided on the seeds yet... but with the timing I may have to go with my autoflower bag haha

If I do go outdoors I may have to scrap the piping idea... not really worth the work for an outdoor autoflower grow... but I can get it set-up for next season.

Watering.... would these pipes be on a timer to feed water to the plants at certain days or would it be continuous? If continuous i could see that being a problem of watering, end up with root rot or worse.
