Well I've been living in my car 2,000 miles from home for a month now...

And I just got hired today on a drilling rig. The drilling activity out here in ND has slowed down in recent months as the cost of crude has risen past $100/barrel.

Some of the speculation I'd heard from others/assumed myself include:

1. politics and recent election
2. aquifers leaking oil/sucking up water from wells
3. price-gouging in this boom-town causing companies to exceed budgets
4. multi-pad wells reducing pump pressure from wells and thus lower output
5. stacked out rigs due to a slow down in pre-drilling construction

Anyway, I'd been calling drilling companies since I arrived in ND 3 weeks ago and was frustrated with the same old response..,"thanks for calling. if we're interested, a recruiter will call you." As the weeks went by I started applying to other companies as well...yesterday I called National Oil-well Varco, a company my college buddy just got with out here, and asked if they were hiring. The guy on the phone said that he could probably give me a job working in the warehouse (distributing and ordering parts for the rig)...he said come on down, so I did.

On my way there I got my 3rd flat tire in 2 weeks. The first one was the result of a nail, due to construction outside the hotel I was sleeping in my car outside of, in Minot, ND. Then when I made it to Williston, a different tire went flat....and this most recent time, the original nail-punctured flat tire went flat again. UGH! I've become very quick at swapping tires/donuts lately. Turns out the tire was fine...perhaps the occasional -30 lows were fucking with my tires' air pressure

Anyway, I interviewed with the guy at NOV...he asked if I was looking to get back on a drilling rig and I said honestly, yes...it might just be a temp job for me. He said he'd let me know by Monday.

This afternoon I became frustrated, thinking "I've been busting my ass for weeks trying to get a gig going and now the weekend is here again, and H.R. are all out of office, FUCKK!!"

I walked out of the library to my car to eat a meal and then my phone rang.... it was a recruiter at Unit Drilling asking me if I needed a job and to go see the tool pusher at the rig.

And just like that, I go from living in my car for a month to being housed and making thousands a week again.

I take my drug test Monday and then start Monday night 5pm-5am (halfway through the hitch of 14 days on/14 off)

DRILL baby, DRILL ;)

Good to hear. Sounds rough as shit sleeping in your car when it gets that cold regardless how much warm clothes you throw on.. Good luck with that new job.

if you're living in your car, you're not 2000 miles away from home, in fact, you're not even 2 steps from home, home is the car.. see where i'm going with this?? :D

I think "working on the drilling rig" is internet codespeak for "I found another morbidly obese chick to house and feed me in exchange for grotesque sexual favors". I could be wrong though. :eyesmoke:
