here is what i did for my first plant(which i started only 5-6 days ago and ive already got a good 2.5 inch stem and 4 nice looking leaves)
1. use the paper towel method to germinate: place the seeds you want to plant onto a moist paper towel and fold the paper towel over, and then put the paper towel on a plate and put that plate into a ziplock bag, and put the ziplock bag in a dark and fairly warm place. after a day or sometimes less you will see the seed sprout from one side. i saw mine sprout after a day.
2. take the seed sprout and put the seed into the soil with the little sprout pointed down. bury the sprout maybe a half inch deep in the soil.
3. water the soil so that the soil is good and moist but not too much, because you dont want to drown your little seedling sprout. the soil should be moist to the touch, but allow the plant to fully dry out before you water it again, because especially when the plant is young, you can drown it relatively easily. the plant will be able to survive longer without water than it will if it has way to much water. also when the plant gets bigger you want to use a mister under the leaves, because certain insects/bugs will hide under the leaves and cause problems.
4. use 2+cfl lights that are high on the kelvin scale(5000-7000) because those lights in that color range give off a blue light that is really good for growth.
5. make your light schedule 24/0 for the first 2-3 weeks, or until the plant is 1/3 the height you want it to be.
6. after it is 1/3 the height you want it to be, change your lighting schedule to 18/6 or straight to 12/12 depending on how quickly you're trying to harvest.

Grow Space: just a few suggestions for your grow space if you dont have a set-up right now. when you get into the later lighting schedules(i.e. not 24/0) you need to make sure that no outside light from anything gets into the plants' grow space, because that will mess up the plants' sleeping schedule. i forget what exactly will happen, but i do remember that none of it is good. also you prob want to get some sort of air circulation going on in your grow space.

well that should be a pretty good start for you. this is what im doing for my grow, and everything appears to be going pretty well with it. hope this helps some, let me know if it does.

Forget soaking seeds, forget paper towels. Germinate your seeds in jiffy plugs, you will get much better success with germination. Your plants will have a good start with no risk of damage to the root. No risk of shock from re planting. Its the way to go mate.

You can pick them up at any garden centre or hydro store, i usually have sprouts within 48 hrs, and like i said it eliminates any risk of shock. Or damage to the taproot. Geo

if you're starting them indoors for the first while make sure that you put some sort of stresses on their stems such as a fan occasionally. maybe a few hours a day or something so that their stems grow strong enough for the plants to survive outside
