best people can do is stop listening to the intenet know it alls and draw your own conclusions from experiences and results
Exactly, and what I've been preaching for years. The first thing a noob does when he decides to grow pot whether it be his first or second time, is seek out a (cannabis) forum which is full of falsehoods, lame advice.....the blind leading the blind. It's quite funny really.

My first indoor garden was probably my best yielding very healthy productive plants. Why? Because I knew how to garden and applied those years of simple and sound principles/methods to pot growing. The next best thing I did was to buy a copy of Mel Frank's book, "MJ Insiders Growing Guide" a totally no-nonsense approach to botany using established techniques that are still in practice today with horticulturists. The finest info I came away with was the scientific studies and phytochrome changes which trigger the flowering response.

#1 Use good genetics. First grow I knew what strains I wanted but didnt realize that the breeder is everything. Buy from a reputible breeder or seedbank I would have to recommend attitude I just spent around 50 bucks on 4 seeds and got fifteen for free plus a T-Shirt. Look at the best-sellers, look at the cup winners, get good genetics, spend the money.

#2 GET GOOD LIGHTING: I've seen all T5 grows I've seen 600w grows I've seen 1000w grows GET A 1000W HPS!!! you will not be sorry. you gotta cool it though. ;)

--> Master your medium. started with coco and loved it, if your hydro experiment first practice makes perfect, get good PH / EC meters get to know it, know how to calibrate them get buffer solutions to check accuracy

--> cut all lower branches off to direct energy up leave the goodies at the top to flower a nice even canopy with all huge colas no popcorn under, better buds+bag appeal=win

--> I have a 4x8 and I sware putting a huge fan at each side just to blow the air around in the tent leads to increased co2 consumption and stronger branches = bigger buds
keep the air movin a lot the more the branches sway, the stronger they get if your not using a net. not to mention helping maintain proper temps and humidity obviously.

--> add organic stuff like bone meal, kelp/seaweed, worm castings **bat/seabird guano** changing up my nutes all the time has given me amazing results. once ill feed with CNS17 commercial synthetic nutes the next I'll use all nectar for the gods + other organics it brings out the taste like crazy and the commercial nutes keep the yields high than straight organics *IMO*

--> I remove the fan leaves on the bottom that aren't getting much light all thru the cycle but at late flower I remove fans that are blocking light from buds, not too many but just enough to let some more light penetrate.......... I wonder though since the leaves are the solar panels for the plant, is the fruit getting more light helping it or would the leaf be more effective at transferring the energy to the fruit

--> T5 great for veg. love them so much....... two 4 bulb 2x4 panels or one 8 bulb 4x4 panel will cover 5x5 veg space and is plenty to keep my 4x8 flowering all day

I go right from 24/0 veg, to 12/12 and have no problems. I might consider a couple days darkness before harvest this time after reading this thread

looking into beneficial bacteria / mycorrhizae / microbes / fungi in the medium for non hydro guys... interesting

when in doubt just follow the feedchart or ask lol

i have 3 rules of thumb that i learned from my experience.

1. pH- calibrate meters frequently, make sure pH stays consistent
2. learn from others
3. dont obsess over your plants- the more you mess with them, the slower they will grow. check on them once a day, you will see a huge difference.

This is exactly what I'm talking about - https://www.rollitup.org/marijuana-plant-problems/599784-deficiency-maybe-magnesium-pics.html#post8405874

Myths -

1. "Check your pH",

2. "They need epsom salts",

3. "Popcorn buds are caused by insufficient light. You need to remove the fan leaves so light can get to the buds".

All of the above are cannabis forum falsehoods, paradigms, that are carried over from one new crop of noobies to the next.

the strain called (dr. grinspoon) has a pheno that grows like a vine with popcorn buds only, its pretty much genetics (plant structure) not lighting..

..Lol, and i lost my train of thought, so i dont know where im going with this... haha

So cannabis in hydro grows fine at either pH 4.2 or 8.5? Sure dude. Sure.

Keeping my hps farther away from the tops in flower. At least 16in. The last 2 weeks of flower dropping humidity, temps, cutting nutes in half. I also move my light another 4-6 inches away from the tops. This helps to get denser buds.
