" This is a way of expressing very dilute concentrations of substances. Just as per cent means out of a hundred, so parts per million or ppm means out of a million. Usually describes the concentration of something in water or soil. One ppm is equivalent to 1 milligram of something per liter of water (mg/l) or 1 milligram of something per kilogram soil (mg/kg). "

so yeah, you were on the right track.

in laymans terms, it's refering to how much nutrient you have in your water :P more stuff you put into your water, the higher the PPM is going to be, 1600PPM should be the limit i believe and even then you should rarely be up that high.

you measure it using a PPM meter, i've yet to see a good affordable one, but could be i'm looking under the wrong name, or maybe they plain don't ome cheap.

yeah, i guess it's important. more so if you're using hydro, as one mistake, and all your plants could be gone.

i currently don't have one, and to be honest i'm with you in that i'm not sure on it's usefulness. i mean the way i see it, i can either follow the instructions on the abck of my nutes, 25% dosage to start etc, and this will technically equate to the correct PPM that i would be looking for should i just be dropping nutes in until it's strong enough? (i think is tarted talking circles around myself there).

so yeah if someone could clarify for me, essentially does a PPM meter just give you a reading on your concentration, and as such makes et easier to prep your water, as you just pour your nutrients in until you hit the PPM you're after on the meter?

Parts per million.I am not saying that this is something that you need to dissmiss but i would worry more about keying my grow area first before even buying the seeds. If you can get the grow room temp spot on even in the hottest of summers then you are near on there also has long has the feed that you are feeding is the right ammount for the size of plant plenty of ventlation you will be fine without a ppm metre.Knowing the ph of the feed that you are feeding is far more important.I have a ppm metre but to be honest has long has the ph is ok make a new batch of feed for every feed whitch should be once a week twice at most then a ppm metre is not needed my yeilds are still the same 4/5 ounce dry of each plant.I would spend my money on a good feed and a good ph testing kit rather than a ppm metre bro.If you was growing for the cannabis cup or something like that then i would say get one but it will just cause you more headaches.
