When its harvest time I keep reading that u wait till 80% of the trichomes are amber. My first question is what are the trichomes, the white hairs growing out or the crystals on the bud? The buds are fairly fresh like 3-4 weeks old and are already turning amber, if I can see them then why do I need a microscope. Another thing is nomatter what color they turn if I just let then continue grow wont they just keep growing?

The trichomes are the "crystals" you see on the bud. A hair like thing containing the oil(or whatever) in the head of it. The white hairs are pistols which collect pollen. You cannont see the trichomes with the naked eye. As far as i understand it, as long as you have new white hairs then the buds are still getting bigger.

Getting a microsope s very important if you want to harvest at the right time.... Depending on what kind of high you want will determine what percentage of the tricomes you want amber.. 80% amber will be couch lock high.... I can tell when the herb is getting close.. it loses that brillant green look and takes on a golden color.... But I always scope it to make sure where I am at....
