What exactly does chlorine in the water do?

chlorine or worse depending where you live chloramine(chlorine bonded to ammonia) is used as a disinfectant to kill bacteria and funguses that could make people ill. it also kills beneficial bacteria and funguses that we want in our soil or other grow medium it also affects ph. so it is counter productive and to be avoided when trying to create a balanced biologically active enviroment either for your plants or as an example an aquarium.

oh i forgot chloramine needs much longer to evaporate if it does at all. it is more stable in solution than chlorine. check with the dwp in your area to find out what chemical they use in your city or town.

Here is a thought. Would there be any harm in it in an inorganic hydro setup? Most of us that have done organic hydro agree its a nightmare with variable results. I personally try ti kill my res off every 3-4 days. What would be the harm in an inorganic system?

Chlorine, is not much of a problem, plants will show some small sign of stress when the res is changed. Given that you flush really good before the next res run. It will go away in a day or 2, if you just fill and go with out letting the water sit for 24-48 hrs. not a big issue.

I'm no expert, but I've never had a problem.i've been on other forums though and I asked the same question and I was told about chlorine is one of the basic elements that a plant needs to grow and some fertilizers omit it cause its in the water .others dont. All you have to do is call the water company to find out what they use chlorine or clorimide

all the best growers around the world use ro or distilled its pure so it makes ph control easy. its easier to get the right ppm with your ferts and you do not have to concern yourself with salt build up in soil or similar grows. besides that there is all kinds of other undesirable compounds in tap water. i have grown with tap and ro or distilled and the latter produces better more controllable results every time. in some areas the tap may have a low ppm and low ph and minimal chlorine levels and can be used without issue though in most areas its undesirable.

Were both in cali so you know my water sucks. Im using about 50/50 ro topping off with tap. Works fine, always looking for ways to increase yield tho..

yeah the ppm in the s.f.v. is over 300 with a ph of 7.8 not good at all for cannabis which is an acidophile. sometimes i use a small amount of tap like a 1 to 10 ratio to raise distilled waters ph a few points or to replenish trace minerals thats it though.

Its a filter system pretty much,
you buy it and connect to your tap.

It pretty much cleans the water to zero ppms in most cases.

ro units run from around a $100 on up worth the investment though. otherwise the cheapest alternative would be those glacier water machines they have at markets and liquor store et.. those are just big ro units the water is 25 cents a gal most places. or you can purchase ro or distilled from markets but that gets expensive quickly depending how big your grow is.

Chorine is what they put into swimming bath's to clear it of any impureaty's,It is a kind of very watered down anti bactierial killer, that is why you eyey goe red when you have been to the swimming baths. And anyone who says that by leaveing the water to stand a while will get rid of chorine is wrong.I had a job for a while has a life guard at my local swimming baths the chorine put in swimming water is just more consontrated it has too be topped up once a fortnight so leaveing it to stand is rubbish all you are doing is makeing it less consantrated than if you left it in a seald container.Useing a fishpump in the nutrient mix helps dissapate the chorine by been moved around the tub causeing it to evaperate ata faster rate than water. And contry to what any one says the ammounts of chorine in the water we feed our plants may do more good than bad by killing any unwanted bactiera,Has long has the water is flushed on a regualar basis it will be fine you have more to worry about what is in the feed alot of feeds have certain pripertys that when brought together produce salt. plants way of getting rid of this excess salt is through it'root system that is why it is best to flush the plants at least 3/4 times during veg and flowering. The ammount of chorine in the water that we have comeing out of our taps is very tiny. But it is a good idea to airate the water with a fish pump with a air stone on the end.
