volcanic rock if im not mistaken. it holds no nute value really. just addes airation in the soil and helps with drainage too. if used around clones and wetted first it addes a great deal of humidity to closed areas too! (humidity domes for clones)

It's a pourous rock that airates soil.
I believe it also retains/absorbs water.
It's mixed in soil, to make the soil less dense. Or used alone as a grow medium.

I buy it at my local hydro shops.
I had a hell of a time finding it at the "home improvement" stores.
I found some at walmart, but it was enriched with
miracle grow nutrients, and seeing as i dont even believe in god, let alone miracles, i didn't buy it.

As I understand it perlite is volcanic that contains moisture, it is heated to a very high temperature and it pops like popcorn. I buy it at the local garden center but, my hydro shop has it as well. The garden center has it 3 size bags, hydro one huge bag. It's not very expensive and you can use it in a soil mix or as a hydro. I use it in Hempy buckets and when you are done you can mix it into your yard or lawn to hep loosen things up. Hope this helps.

It also has one more benefit. It helps keep PH neutral, believe it or not. I can't remember exactly why(the scientific stuff.lol), I think it has something to do with the fact that perlite is a neutral substance, and won't go acidic on ya. It probably has to do with the help in drainage and aeration, too. :)

I've noticed plants grown with perlite are generally hardier then other plants. I think plants absorb silicon from perlite much easier then from the few other substrates I've compared it to.

its what i grow in..i get the stuff from walmart it works great the nutes they added to it are like .1% so its nothing to worry about.i just don't add any nutes for the first week in veg.
