I think that a mix of different mediums allows you to get some benefit from each one. they are all good for different reasons.
perlite good at drawing water up like a wick. Ussually 3 parts of this to 1 part vermiculite is used as a medium.
vermiculite is made from silicates of magnesium, aluminium, and iron which are important trace elements. It has water holding capabilities and will also insulate heat. Holds too much water to be used alone.
Coconut fibres (stringy) provide support and aeration, also good for using over the holes of the basket to stop other medium from falling through
Coir fibre is a denser, more refined coconut product, and looks abit more like dirt.
Both have antifungal/bacterial properties, and contain root stimulating hormones
rockwool is convenient and can be manipulated, also has water drawing and holding capabilities. There are new, more advanced rockwools being released all the time.
expanded clay/hydroton has very good aeration and is pebbly.
I'm going for coconut/coir fibre, perlite, vermiculite, and expanded clay but not sure about ratios yet. And coir fibre isn't expensive.. it expands to 9 times its size when you break it up and mix with water, you should only need one brick. I've got a $12 brick about a year ago and have used an 1/4th of it!??!
