Hey all -
I started growing about 6 months ago. Before then, I had only germinated seeds and planted a few outside that didn't grow to maturity. I am a doctoral student so I research my stuff, and despite reading lots of stuff on here, I still made mistakes. Some of those mistakes were following advice from people on here.
Mistake #1
Don't ever plant bag seeds. Never. My first attempt was bad seed (nirvana seeds take FOREVER to ship sometimes) and all of the females ended up growing male parts about 4-6 weeks into flowering. I ended up cutting them all because some of them had pistils growing everywhere in the bud. I didn't want them to pollenate the female seeds from nirvana that ended up coming in about a month after the lights did (I have two 400 W HPS/MH)
Mistake #2
Think before you plant! That strain you ordered may be a monster two months from now, and you may end up having to lop a big part of the top off if you don't have the space. I had always wanted to try haze and it was only 5 weeks after I planted it did I realize that haze is a bad idea. The things grew to six feet tall despite being flowered at the same time as the Jock Horrors (that ended up the perfect height).
Mistake #3
Feminized seeds. Seeds in general, I spent too much on them. I spent about 400 bucks on feminzed seeds. I thought cloning was beyond my skill ability for the time being so assumed every grow would be from seed. WRONG! Cloning is actually so easy its rediculous. Forget the cloning kits and all those domes. I've attached a picture of my ghetto clone closet. Cost of materials: zilch as I already had the lights on hand for seedlings. Follow the directions on most guide books on the internet for taking cuttings, but you do not need heating bads, humidity domes, etc. If you have the time (like I do) all you need is a spray bottle to spray them a few times a day during that critical first week. Put them in rockwool and use the dip n grow (or something like it). I have 100% success rates. Seeds on the other hand have a chance of not sprouting. Out of 30 I planted after germination, 2 failed to sprout. I've taken 20 clones and none have died.
Order male and female seeds to save money, take clones from both and keep the ones that their parents end up being female. You can also take clones from plants after you harvest the bud. Put it under a 24/0 CFL after cutting all but a few lower leaves and in a few weeks you will have cuttings from your fav bud you forgot to clone. I actually prefer this method because I can say wow, that plant was awesome and I want it again.
I've attached pics of my two closets. You will see the haze plants. Out of 6 of them planted, only two are in great condition. The only reason they are still in there is that I don't have anything to replace them with. Thats another advanted of the clone system, forget messing with plant probs if its only one or two plants being a problem - replace it with a clone of one you know will turn out great! I don't want to mess with plant problems. I'm a busy person and my logic is plant 20 to be sure of getting 10. I'm in it for personal consumption and to cover utility and rent.
I highly recommend Jock Horror (or Jack Herrer depending on who you get it from) for indoor growing. I love orange bud also, my orange bud plants had no problems at all and very high yeilding for their height. Jock horror also grows really well and I've attached a picture of a jock horror clone with its parent in the backround. The clone in some ways grew better, its top bud is so heavy that I may have to rig something up to keep it from tipping over. THOSE are the problems you want
EQUIP SUMMARY:
two 400 watt HPS/MH lights(never use the MH anymore, the systems are on constant 12/12 with a cloning/nursery closet feeding them.
plenty of seeds from nirvana: Papaya, Jock Herrer, Orange Bud, Haze/NL, AK48, Ice, aurora indica
growing in soil because it was just better for my living arrangement. Using Advanced Nutrients 3 part, adding big bud in sometimes. Used Bud blood at start of flowering (really works!). Also use Advanced nutrients final phase (also is great!). Giving final phase causes a last little poof of growth and greatly increases taste.
