What size cubes -

Just a question on Rockwool cubes. I currently use 6" cubes for my 2'x2' ebb and flow system. These fit in the tray perfectly and I have had good results with them. My question is, for plants growing to be 24" to 30" (at harvest) can I use a 4" cube without ill effect?

My thought is, if I water a little more often it should work out about the same...need some advice.

I'd say maybe, but your severely limiting root mass. My plants had roots growing through in week 3, so I transplanted them to 2 gallons pots with hydroton. Probably the best combo...rockwool holds a lot of excess water, hydroton holds slightly more air and is reusable unlike rockwool. For 3 feet plants I would probably choose 3 gallons ideally.

Thank you Someguy. My plants have roots that grew and spread through the bottom of my tray. They filled the 6" cubes and then created a "mat" network just out in the open. With a proper watering/feeding schedule, I have found that there is not much need for additional medium.

I guess a better way to phrase my question would be, how much plant will a 4" cube support. I know that the 6" cube will support up to a max 4' (YMMV) without any additional root space needed.
