If you can deal with the heat use hps, if not T5s or cfls.

use a 400 switchable light with a built in ballast from sunburst but you will need a inline fan

I agree with Sickaluph! If your not using 1000watts you either: A- have size/electricity limitations B- dont know what your doing or C- Think you know what your doing but dont.
600 watts hps may have more lumens per watt but nothing compares to the intensity that a 1000 puts out which is what these high energy plants thrive on.

When anyone tells you there is only one alternative for anything, you immediately know that is not someone to put much stock in.

I totally agree with you :hump:
Why cant people use the 1k and do this shit right from the get go? Never made any sense to me why anyone would max out a cfl.. In the end you have so much more running a big light. Also, The punishment is the same running a cfl over a 1k light. Might as well go for it!...Life is short.

What if your growing in a 3x3x8 grow room/closet, wouldn't 1000 watts be to much? I'm a total noob but it seems to me you need to use what's right for the space your growing in, right? I haven't grown anything indoors yet, I'm getting it all together now I'm just down to getting my hydro set up and mylar put on the walls. Ive been doing some test runs in my grow room for the past cpl of days while waiting for my parts to come in just to see what kind of temps I'm getting in my room and it's averaging 80 to 85 degrees. I'm using a 400 watt MH/HPS switchable. So wouldn't a 1000 watts be to much for that small of a grow space?

Im planning a similar setup with about the same amount of space, was gunna go for a 600 watt HPS but im a bit worried it will get too hot, especially if your getting those temps with 400; have you got an extractor fan setup? and can anyone comment how beneficial an intake duct is and if its worth doing?

yeah I got a Hydrofarm 60 CFM Squirrel cage venting through the ceiling for an exhaust but I can see now that I need to get something for an intake because I have to run it the whole time to keep it around 85* I don't want to cut a hole in my wall but that's what I'm gonna have to do. I found this exhaust online for around 80 bucks with shipping. I like it because it has a grounded power cord so I don't have to wire it like most others. What I'm not sure about is how will it affect my grow room because it rated at 160 cfm on low and 200 cfm on high. How would that work, 60 going out and 160 coming in? I'm taking my time setting up this room because I want it to be close to perfect before I start growing.

Good start, but you have it backwards. You want 160 going out and 60 coming in. The 100 will come from somewhere, like all the little leaks in your growing area. You'll have extra air coming in under the door, around the windows.

Much, much better than all that extra (smelly, dopey) air being pushed out thru the window/door cracks. :)

 Hey Kitty thanks for that tip I'm gonna have to rethink this a little bit more now as to which type of fan to buy.

I want to get a 450 cfm inline 6" for my 400. Like a Can, Vortex, ect. It would probably be good for at least one thousand watter, maybe two in the future.

ok dropastone a 1000 might be too much in the sense of heat build up but not in the sense of actual light you can never get too much of that indoors really if cost of electricity, etc. is no issue because nothing really compares to the sun which puts out around 1400 watts on each square meter of the earth and thats from millions of miles away lol . But there is a point of diminishing return. But for a 3x3 room you really could do a 600 hps and do just great since it is such a small area you will have heat bulid up so i would suggest intake and outake fans for sure. So to answer your question a 1000 prob would be a little overkill for that size grow and btw try to keep your garden around 77 i found that the be a pretty ideal temp for most strains :)

Thanks for the advice, I will take that into consideration when I get ready to set up a veg room (not any time soon). But when I do I can always move my 400 watt into a veg room along with my exhaust fans. Then I could look at getting a 600 watt with bigger exhaust fans. But right now I'm pretty locked in on the 400 watt since I already bought it.

Man, When I first started this project I thought I was gonna get by with only spending around 350 bucks. So far I've got 507 bucks into it and now it's starting to look like it will be around 700 bucks invested. It will all be worth it in the end though.

I'm just a beginner when it comes to indoor growing So I'll take all the advice I can get. For now I'm just taking it nice and slow and making sure my new grow room is setup right before I even think about sticking any plants in there.

yeah of course and with a 400 you really wont have bad results at all... you just wont be redlining in your space if that puts it in perspective. And yeah grow rooms will nickel and dime you to death but it will all be worth it in the end. heck most of this stuff you only have to buy once than after the first grow its all up hill from there. :weed:
