Looking for a basic or intricate explanation because up until now i've been using a Fox Farm ocean soil and perlite ... with a 3/1 mixture ... but as the plants near the end of there life i see more and more that the soil is no longer airy and it becomes more and more like a big box of cement lol.. was interested in looking into using hydroton... but not quite sure how that product works any input would be appreciated

You get very good air to water ratio using hydroton, that's one of the main advantage plus they are re-usable too.. You can use just hydroton on their own or mix them with rockwool, coco or soil, they are very versatile.

but from what i've heard its so airy that u have to water it more frequently...but would u say using hydroton as an alternative to perlite?... i would assume itd give much better airation

asking this question, is like asking which political party is the best lol. your gonna get a lot of opinions but its gonna fall on you personally for how much you want to spend. how much effort you want to put into it. how much room you have. all those play factor.

Yeah true but more air in the root zone = bigger healthy plants.. & You can substitute hydroton for Perlite yes.

Right now my favorite soil is Kellogg Patio Plus and I'll explain why... First, It's only $5 for a 1.5 cu ft bag. Second it has mushroom compost + kelp + worm castings + bat guano and beneficial organisms. Third, it's made locally. Fourth, it's organic.

I also have plants sitting in Roots Organic ($18 per 1.5 cu ft) and Fox Farm Ocean Forest ($16 per 1.5 cu ft). Yeah they're good potting soils, but not three times the price good. Growth is equal across the board. And this is my third year testing all three side by side. A little personal rule I've learned in Biology class. Never trust results unless you can duplicate them at least three times. I've done it and this will be my last year that I ever use FF or RO. Complete waste of money.

I also looked into Sunshine Mix and BioBuzz. I didn't test them like the three mentioned above, but I did feel them and I wasn't impressed. I've been looking at Higromite Silica Stone ($20 for 21 liters) and Hydrocorn ($40 for 50 liters), but they're really just fillers and don't compare to potting mixes. When I do look at fillers, it's hard to be the perlite ($4 for 0.4 cu ft) and vermiculate ($5 fpr 0.4 cu ft). Perlite is neutral while vermiculite acts like a buffer and adds Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium.

I swear I'm becoming bitter because I'm starting to hate everything I see in the hydro shops. Anything pitched to cannabis growers is always ridiculously priced and over hyped. But what can you expect when you had former drug dealers go quasi-legit. lol.

I'm trying a 60/40 mix of coco to perlite in hempy's with the bottom 2'' filled with perlite for the first time, and I gotta say that I'm impressed. I'm only on my 2nd grow so I cant really say much, but Im really liking the coco hempy thing:)

So far I have been liking a promix/ perlite medium. I mix the perlite in kinda on the heavy side, but i prefer the better drainage. I have been using Dyna-Gro nutes in this medium with excellent results.

Hempy buckets with 4 parts perlite 1 part vermiculite work great for me. The root system is incredible and white as snow right up to harvest.
