What's the best medium to grow with in hydroponics?

Hydroton (clay pebbles)

Lots of different substrates as well as systems. Is one better? Not sure, I use hydroton balls myself for flood and drain.

I was thinking either hydroton or rockwool myself. I didn't like the grow pellets
