The best place to get it from is the same place window cleaners get there water from, there is usually a pump station that sells pure water, check your local area for one :)

Cheaper to buy new humidifiers after the scale kills them over years and cleaning has destroyed the element.

Distilled water from pharmacies, for eye care. Couple bucks a gallon.
Here Distilled and 'filtered' water by the gallon are the same price...about $1.10 per gallon.

I did check out the refill stations at our local places...a 5g refill will run you $5.99. :P Which makes it more expensive to buy/refill than it does just to buy jugs. That of course makes no sense since there's the individual cost of the gallon jugs and all.

Hydro-Logic RO-150 or the Micro 75 system is going to be your best bet on cost. The only other thing you will need is a 5 gallon bucket and a basic aquarium 1/4" float stop. Don't waste your time buying RO/Distilled water you will end up spending far more than what you would on a system not to mention it's more of a hassle.

+1 for the RO system advise.

I bought a Hydro-Logic RO-200 (overkill but fills faster) and I'm still on the 1st membranes/filters YEARS later. I still have a very low PPM and my city water is very hard. I bought the flush kit for it even, never hooked it up. I keep a Brute trashcan (food safe) with a float-valve attached and then run it off a sink adapter. It has more than paid for itself - easily.

btw - I did buy the upgraded KDF carbon filters btw, those seem to be worth it.

The 1 thing I found is that mine is so old, you can't get the replacement filters anymore. Now's it's a RO-150/300 model and I'm not clear if the replacements are drop in equivalents for the older/original model and if they fit & work fine.

How much are you watering?
I use around 10 gallons daily, and with the hydrologic ro150 my filters require replacing every 3-4 months.

Only a couple gallons a day, small time here. ;-) But still, several years on these filters/membranes and last time I did a PPM check it was very low from what I remember - lower than I had expected given their age and how hard the water is here.

I got an ro unit from bulk reef supply for the same cost as a hydrologic 150 but it’s a 5 stage. I have chloramines so I needed the extra carbon block. If your just using for your watering water then they have really good prices and reliable units. If it’s just a humidifier and you want to make the water a little less harsh in your humidifier then just get the hydrologic small boy.
