Whats the difference between sativas and indica?

What is the difference and how can you tell if a plant is which?
I will let somebody else answer the first part but as for the second Sativas tend to be longer, stretched out, taller plants with longer and skinnier leaves while Indicas are often shorter plants, more like bushes, have fat broad leaves compared to the Sativa.

What he said.

With that in mind, you can select your breeds based on what kind of growing you're planning. With sativa being quite tall, some strains getting 8' high, this is a great selection for outdoors, since the sky's the limit.

Many indoor growers prefer the indicas since they do grow bushy, stay a little shorter, and have denser growth(more bud per square foot)

It's not that black and white, but you get the idea..also the high is going to be different too, indicas generally will give you a more stoney, sedated buzz and sativa can be a more uplifting high.

I personally grow indoors and prefer the easy stuff like Northern Lights.

As for determining which is which, its really hard to tell for sure, unless you buy seeds from a seed bank. Often times, a breed may be an indica/sativa mix, so it would show signs of both.

It's really going to boil down to you getting the type of growth and harvest that you are happy with. It's part genetics and partly based on how skillfully you grow your plants and what environment you provide for them.

In essence;
Indica = Short bushy plant, large wide leaves, chilled out feeling when smoked for a whole body effect. More potent bud less yield.
Sativa = Tall and Skimpy plant, thin leaves, more of a buzzing feeling in the head when smoked. More yield, typically less potent.

Everyone has done a great job at describing the physical differences. Psychoactively, sativas tend to produce a more energetic uppity euphoria, and Indicas tend to be a less energetic and stoney body high.
