Yeah...a lot of us read the article...if you read the whole thread you could see that 420 predates that, as early as 66 qhere bob dylan uses it(kind of) in his song "rainy day.woman 12 and 35"...so its gotta go back at least that far.420 started in San Leandro, Ca. It was some high school kids that would meet and smoke that started the phrase, it took of at that high school and started spreading across the bay area. In the 90s (i believe) high times used it one the cover of there magazine, and that's when the saying became a national phenomenon. 420 is NOT police code for smoking out. stay high.
