What's worse - picking too early or too late?

Obviously it is ideal to pick a just the right time, depending on personal taste and all that. But what's worse to do, picking too early or picking too late?

I am not sure if there is a too late.
I would say to early will give you crap.

I think it would be hard for a smoker to harvest to late.

if you wait to long.. a plant female plant will often grow a male flower and seed itself.. i have not seen this but i have heard about this from credible sources...

I think I would prefer a bit late than a bit early..

this is true...this is the way SOMA creates his feminized seeds, he calls the technique "rodelization" or Age Feminization Technique (AFT).He finds with the strains he grows if flowering females for 10-14 days past peek ripeness they will sprout male flowers.....

Would a plant harvested late that sprouted male flowers be considered a hermie?

Would the seeds it makes be hermie seeds? Or raise the chances of it becoming a hermie?

yes it would raise the chances of offspring being hermie just like any other feminized seeds....feminized seeds are created when you stress females in some way either by photo period fluctuations, gibberellic acid ,or age stressing, using pollen from these male flowers that are created out of stress to pollinate a pure unstressed female will give you seeds that will have high female ratios when grown out but YES they will also have higher chance of getting some male flowers especially if grown in stressful situations.......

and yes as soon as any plant sprouts sex organs of the opposite sex it is considered hermie, no matter how induced...

I would personally say that too late is worse. I have picked early and it didn't seem to hurt. I like to pick what most people would consider to be early so that I avoid the horrible CBD couch lock weed that I can't stand. I like the more cerebral high from picking early.

I would say if you have gone 12/12 for 7 weeks you can safely pick. I wouldn't pick any earlier than that, but I would hate to pick at 10 or 11 weeks (indica's of course).

I had a buddy who knew very little about growing and had his flowering FOREVER and the weed was just very lazying. The potency was good, but just made me SOOOO lethargic.

Nice thread.

It seems to me then that since I am doing an outdoor grow for personal use only I could harvest select parts of my plant and leave the rest to see if it seeds. I suppose there's no guarantee that any of them would hermie though but it's a thought IF I end up with much yield. The only problem with that idea though is that if I have multiple strains at the same site I might not know which pollinated which.

There seems to be some conflicting ideas out there about harvesting for effect. Indicas that are meant to have high CBD ratios and Sativas less so. Actually I think it's that if you go by a standard harvest time- 50/50 on trichomes- it just naturally ends up that way. Some people have suggested that harvesting a sativa a little late to smooth out the head high or a normally medicinal indica a little early to keep it from being too couch-locky. What I'm wondering right now, although I'm a few months away from needing to worry about it, is if I should harvest all my strains when they are 50/50 cloudy and amber so that I get the truest characteristics of the strains that the seed bank says they should have. I am trying to grow white rhino which is heavy in CBD so that would be one to maybe harvest some of early just to see how it ends up being a little lighter, since it supposedly is very strong and medicinal.

It doesn't seem to me though that you could harvest indica early and it be sativa-like or a sativa late to make it more like an indica. Or can you? For instance, harvesting a haze or pure sativa really late won't make it seem like a couch lock medical indica, will it? Probably not but from some of what's written you might think so.

Harvest timing is a matter of personal preference. When the glandular trichomes are clear with very little, if any coloration, THC levels are at their peak with CBD and CBN both at levels that will not overly influence the THC with their sedative effects. Some prefer more overwhelming narcotic type effects, allowing the resin glands to cloud and begin to amber or darken to increase overall cannabinoid content. The resin glands appear and therefore will mature at different times. A compromise is made when determining the desired overall maturity level to harvest. It depends on the growers preference in effect and palate.

above says harvest when "most" trichomes are cloudy gives up, head high and that harvesting when "most" are amber gives you a narcotic couch lock and harvesting at 50/50 gives you head and body. Doesn't seem like it's quite that simple. Or is it just that simple that if a person likes indica they grow it til it's "ready" and they know they get the couch lock but if for example they were growing indica but wanted it to be really a sativa they just harvest early? Doesn't seem like it. Seems like if that were actually true we'd all just grow the same strain and harvest buds at different trichome stages.

Bought one of the little scopes and can't focus it in for chit.

By the way, I'm not a heavy smoker. I store my stashes in Foodsaver bags sealed airtight. It works very well and the weed stays incredibly fresh. It is said that as weed ages some of the THC transforms to CBDs so that something like a haze can actually mellow over time and I suppose it would also mean something like an indica could even become more of a couch lock. I don't know how significant this is or how fast it happens. But anecdotally I can say I've noticed a nice mellowing of some weed that once made me a little too "up" and thoughtful(paranoid) to now making me have a very nice, comfortable high- it's become very nice for me. It would seem to me that a lot of this THC-CBD transformation occurs in spite of not having air available because I think for the most part I kept it airtight. With that in mind I am thinking about harvesting part of my plants to the slightly early side just to plan for having it around for a while and transforming down the road into the type of weed it's supposed to be at harvest. Follow me? But the rest I think I/you would harvest at 50/50 to get it to what most people consider the true character of the strain.

I'm interested in what people think of the idea that harvesting a sativa late or indica early makes one much more like the other.. I wouldn't think it's really that way.

I estimate that my plant has been flowering for at least seven weeks. I started it outside where, to my surprise, it was bursted with young flowers. We were approaching summer and longer days, so I decided to get a light and bring it inside and start a 12/12 cycle. I did that for about five weeks until the flowers looked ready. I decided to harvest because over 30% of the pistils have changed color. I prefer a more cerebral high. I flashed dried a small bud and smoked it. The results - really good! I nice, long lasting buzz that didn't make me want to lay down. It was my first ever harvest and I learned a lot. By the way, my strain is mostly indica. We'll see in a few weeks after the harvest is dried and cured a little bit if it still retains that cerebral high I was after.

Can this be an explanation for why i have found the occasional seed in my harvest , no hermies and never males around .

Just curious, are you pretty familiar with the soaring, trippy, cerebral high of a sativa? I'm not putting you on the spot, just really wondering if sativas and indicas can be made to be very similar to one another just by timing the harvest. I wouldn't think so and there would be no real reason for a seed company like Greenhouse to develop and promote a short sativa like Arjan's Haze #3 for indoor growing in that case. Or can it be that indicas can feel just like sativas and vise versa depending on trichome timing with the main reason for indicas being sea of green, indoor growing type(height) limitations?

I think most enjoy the "couch lock" high, that comes from the dark amber triches.
With that in mind, harvesting early yields clear trichomes, and a high brain- high. I've harvested too early twice and regretted it. Give me the mature buds with dark trichomes.

Really? I love that head high. Doesn't make me want to sit on my couch and not do shit all day. I have had a fairly pure Sativa strains and the head high can be really insane (a bit too much at times) and you cannot get and Indica to do that for you no matter what you try to do. If you were to harvest it early enough not to have the CBD you've harvested it early enough not to have any THC so it's just never going to happen.

That being said, I like a good mellow body high, but if you run long on your harvest time with an Indica it goes from mellow high to "I wanna kill myself I'm so fuckin lazy". I find that I end up wanting to sleep that high off.

Yes, a stressed female plant might produce only one male flower that you never see, and then later when you smoke the fruits of your labor you find a seed maybe a couple....the planted selfed itself.....:joint:
