Please please please do not use fox farm ocean forest. My first grow I made the mistake of using ocean forest and it was a struggle from start to finish. I'll be the first to say Fox farm makes decent products. I still love their neuts, and some of their other soils may not be bad (I refuse to give their soil another chance).
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: Ocean forest has enough neuts to go from clone/seed all the way to flower. And then if you do not flush for multiple weeks when you start your flower neutrients your going to have buildup. I burned the hell out of my first plants because of the fox farm soil, I then watched multiple friends do the same thing. You cannot use this soil with the basic fox farm chart that they provide, or you WILL get nutrient burns.
Since then I have switched to Sunshine mix 8 (I add a few things but a GREAT basic grow medium)
Listen to me ok.. I have tried nearly every pre-mixed soil out there (including sunshine #
and really nothing out there compares to FF Ocean Forest. Let me adress some of the prior comments in this post.
First and foremost, Fox Farm is a great company. I am not a HUGE fan of the nutes, but have used them before with great success. That being said, the Ocean Forest is the shit. The guy who posted the comment said he had problems with nutrient burn and buildup. LOL, DUH! We have two seperate issues here.
1. Nute burn. LOL. Well yeah your gonna get nute burn because this soil is maxed out with nutes to begin with. Ask anyone at a grow shop and they will tell you this off the bat. I dont know why this guy says it like its a bad thing. Just water the plants plain PHed water for the first few weeks and it will get you lush green growth and through the "clone/seedling stage" of growth. Once the plants begin to grow vigorously, begin adding nutes at 1/4 strength, eventually working up until you reach your plants threshold for nutrient burn. A good sign to stop adding more nutes is tip burn. This is your plants telling you "hey, this is all i can take buddy". Watch closely, and after a cycle or two you will really begin to learn your individual plants wants and needs.
2. Build up. Buildup, as in Salt Buildup, occurs when a plant is being given too high of a concentration of nutrients, and the unused nutrients dry up and literally form salt. This causes nutrient lock-out and in turn diffiencies. There are many preventative measures that can be taken to stop salt buildup before it occurs, and many ways to easily and successfully combat it once it has already set in. DISCLAIMER- YOU CAN GET BUILDUP WITHOUT OVER USING NUTES OR BURNING PLANTS. (a good way to find out is to check your PPM of water BEFORE you water your plant (while its in the res or watering can whatever), then collect the run off and test the PPM again. If your runoff is a significantly higher PPM than what your putting in.. YOU HAVE SALT BUILDUP my friend
)
Preventative:
Different products like House and Garden "drip clean", and others which i cant think of now, PREVENT salt buildup from ever starting.
Combative:
Clearex. It alters the ions or some shit at a molecular level, freeing the salts and allowing your plant to begin uptaking nutrients again.
Basically in a nutshell, use nutes sparingly in the beggining, if any at all, and SLOWLY work your way up to a higher strenght. The one thing i agree with that buddy said in his post is that you will get nutrient burn from following hte FF schedule in FFOF. Very true. Most companies charts run hot, which is not suprising for obvious reasons. The more you use, the faster you have to buy a new bottle, the more money they make, DUH. That being said, the moral of the story is
LESS IS ALWAYS MORE. Obviously he is over feeding and having nute burn problems. Those fking charts screw up more people than you could ever imagine. They are only a
RECCOMENDATION people.
And finally, my last little nugget of information is regarding the guys post about adding perlite and other things. I dont know why one would add bat guano, the shit is loaded with nutes. Perlite is something that would be up to each individual grower, and there needs. I can tell you this, Ocean Forest does not NEED extra perlite, but it does help the soil dry out a little quicker, in turn giving more oxygen to the roots which is always a good thing. I would only reccomend adding perlite if you were on an irrigation system. If you water by hand, adding extra perlite to your mix is only going to create much more work because the plants dry up quicker. Also, watch your nutes if your going to be cutting it heavy with perlite as there is less buffer for the roots when being fed hardy nute mixes. Hope this helps boys and girls. Peace out.
