I planted my first grow last Saturday and its all going well but I was wondering when I fertilize for the first time. I heard tht you wait for the plant to take all the nutrients out of its soil.

Depends on the soil. Some high quality soils are good for up to 3 weeks. Others need food right out of the gate.

How do they look?

^agreed ... If they still look nice and green, you could start giving them a 1/2 or 3/4 dose of fert in the water for first few days.

I use Miracle Grow Seed Starting Potting Mix. Most my plants go a good month in veg before they need anything. But all plants are different. I keep an eye out for nitrogen deficiency, since in my experience, that's the first thing to get used up. I add more nitrogen by feeding my plants fish emulsions (5-1-1).

It's not to hard, MJ need nitrogen (N).during veg and hardly uses phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) until flower. When it does flower you want very little N and lots of P and K.

The actual number represents percent of nutrient, not how good it is. Infidel for example said he uses a fert with 3% N. Its going to work just as good as mine which has 5%, but he'll need to apply it more frequently. In a way that's kind of better, because if he accidently feeds to much, he's using less so his plants should recover easier.

I've used 12-1-1 before safely, but I've been gardening for a while, and losing a few plants won't hurt me.

When I'm in the store, the sales pretty much dictate what I'll use.

I wait until the seedling (coteldon sp?) leaves start to turn yellow...that's when I know it's time to start adding ferts. They always lose green before the upper leaves in my experience - I think any sooner could burn your plants.

Good Luck
