When to Harvest: help a noob

I’ve been reading articles online and a lot of them claim that ideal harvest period is when 70-90% of pistils have turned orange. They also claim that when 90%+ pistils have darkened, the weed will have more of a narcotic effect. What are your thoughts on this? I heavily prefer sativa and a cerebral high. However, I only had access to indica seeds so I had to grew indica. Thanks in advance!

Imo genetics dictate effect. Not harvest time. When my last pistols have receded or 90% like you said I usually have around 30% amber tricomes. This is peak ripeness imo. Ymmv.

There’s one plant that’s a week older than the others but has the most white hairs. Is this a sign that the other plants will also have a second wave of white pistils? Or do you think the oldest plant is just stressed? It’s the shortest and has had the most problems with leaves/nutes.

Did some research on the forum and people claim that I can look at a calyx at the bottom of a branch to gauge harvest time. I have attached a picture from this morning of this calyx from my plant. Any input on when harvest will be from this pic?

Ummm no. Listen to the others that have chimed in already - go ten weeks ( at a minimum ) flowers mature ON THEIR OWN TIME not according to yours. They get done when they get done. It is very difficult to pull a flowering plant too late , but hella easy to chop too early.

Many “well-know members” stated that, in addition to pistils and trichomes, these calyxes on the bottom can be used as a sign of ripeness. These calyxes should get swollen. I was asking for opinions on how long it has to go by the look of these calyxes. This is not me dictating the plant. It’s to figure out what the plant has to tell me

Take that “ well known member “ thing with a grain of salt . It means nothing really , other than member has been active enough to get that badge. Not based on experience of that individual.
This site is flooded with trolls and BRO SCIENCE individuals that watch too many YT videos. You can only get your REAL experience in your OWN garden. Triches/ pistils are but a few indicators of ripeness.

what are the other indicators that I can look to? Right now I’m basically relying solely on pistil method as I have sorta bad eyesight and it’s pretty difficult for me to tell anything about the trichomes through a jewelers loupe

2nd strain I grew was purple erkle. I had a good connect for clones 10 years ago. I had a few super strains.. Honestly the Purple Erkle is a pain to get yields indoor.. Yes it was very beautiful plant. Very nice structure with dense compact buds. Its smoke was so-so. Great tasting but not as strong as its son Grand Daddy Purple.
I just got my hands on a special pheno of Black Water OG (Mendo Purps x SFV OG). What got me excited was that it has almost the same bud structure as Purple Erkle but smells 10x stronger. I am halfway through flower rn so I will let you know how it finishes but I can already tell its gonna blow Purple Erkle out of the water

And by the looks of things ( week 10 ) should be about right. Other indicators that happen , leaf fade , she stops or slows in drinking , sugar leaf die off ( getting late ) , etc.
Many so-called 8 week strains are actually longer , never go by breeder estimates, they are guides only.
If your sight is not so good as stated , then this should help. Judge ALL of the individual “ tops “.
Sometimes you can harvest the main ones and let middle / lowers have a little more maturity time.
But remember.... this grow isn’t over when you cut it down ..... you will have to dry/cure it. And that is another stage that can ruin your grow effort if not done right.

Most people cut down about a week or 2 earlier than they should. Only thing I would cut down early is outdoor. That is because a week earlier tear downs makes the product dry, cure and look better (Pro Tip)

Definately not a pro tip. Outdoors should be harvested when they are done as well

You mush have more experience that I do.... but yeah if I cut 1 week early outdoor better product so I gonna keep on doing what I know works best
I have lots of experience doing large indoor and outdoor so Im talking from personal experience. Not just talking out of my ass

Those are some nice sized buds. A little over fed from the looks of the leaves and/or maybe too much humidity? but still a large yield and some nice purple buds
next time use just a little more nitrogen (I recommend adding in Botanicare Calmag) and dilute the potassium and phosphorous a smidge
