im just finishing my first grow (5 autos, one tuned out to be male) and here's how I fucked up.
I used some crap potting soil with no drainage. Then I fed them too early anticipating the nutes in the soil being used up.
Burnt them.
Laid off feeding them but then went too much the other way.
When I realized they were starving I fed them but at 75% of recommended strength but for three waterings in a row. Burnt them again.
I've learned a lot from my first grow. Err on the side of caution nutes wise with autos and you have to let them dry out.
The roots need to spread throughout the pot. Autos are on a tight timeframe. You need to make them work to seek out moisture and grow. Too much water drowns them. THey need to breathe. Also you might stunt them by fimming. Photos can veg longer to recover but with autos the clock starts from germination. If the plant needs to take the time to repair itself it's using that time not to be making bud. Simply put.
