when to transplant?

Hi, so I transplanted my 20 day old seedlings into some 1 gallon pots a week ago and I noticed roots coming out of the drain holes in the new containers already. The growth seems to have slowed down considerably since the appearance of these roots. Will a 3 or 4 gallon pot really last through flowering if I transplant again soon? It just seems to me they get rootbound so quickly, how will tripling the size of the pot last for a couple months?
I've seen many people have larger plants in smaller pots than I'm using. Or could it be another problem causing the stunted growth? The plants look pretty healthy to me though so I'm not sure whats going on. Unfortunately I have no pictures but any help would be greatly appreciated :)

the rule of thumb is one gallon for every month the plant is living

what is more important is how long and how big you veg them. if you wanna flower soon, I suggest plant in 3 gal today, wait 4-5 days then switch them. you'll be good.

It depends on how big is your plant before it's root bound? Just cause you have roots coming out of the holes don't mean it's root bound. If it's root bound you'll have some drooping and slow growth. I would put'em something that going to last till you know what sex say 2 or 3 gallon pot then put'em a 5 gallon pot if their female:eyesmoke: I have used 3 gallon grow bag for the whole grow. How big are you going to grow out your plants?
